| Diabolic Doppelganger08-16-04, 12:50 AM | I am going to play a Red Wizard, and a friend of mine wants to play a Thayan Knight. She wants to understand the mentality of the Knights, and their relationship with the Red Wizard. Is there anybody out there who could take a swing at this, or at least point me to references? Thanks in advance. |

It's not really like the wizard says: "go get me a glass of water" and the knight goes, although theres nothing to say they couldn't or that the isn't in fact an actual one time slave of the red wizard, that he/she had turned into a thayan knight. Also, the knight should always act as the bodyguard for the wizard, which is primarily what they are anyways. If someone shoves the wizard in a bar, the knight steps in and pops the shover, and unless the wizard orders him to, he shouldn't be too far from the wizard's side in battle, as the knights are designed to be the physical presence of the red wizards. Odds are they are not friends, at least not GOOD friends. They could be cordial to each other, as there is nothing to say that you have to be abnormally cruel as a Red Wizard. The wizard maybe could ask for advice or an opinion, especially in relation to things he may not have a great experience with, like weapons for instance. Odds are the knight would have very good physical attributes, STR/DEX/CON and decently good INT and WIS but the lowest score should goto CHA, as the knights are kinda like the Red Wizards Secret Service, in that they are seen and not heard, and would rarely speak on behalf of the wizard. Here's a quick reason for the other scores: Strength: no brainer, he hits things because the wizard doesnt. Dexterity: it helps because if the wizard decides he needs to drop a fireball to get out of battle, odds are the Thayan Knight is expendable, as both of them well know. Reflex saves, plus they can wear lighter armor and be more maneuverable in getting to opponents, especially bowman. Constitution: high hitpoints means you can stay alive longer, which means you can protect the wizard longer. Intelligence: theres no reason you have to be a dimwit, regardless of profession. Plus you can be better at planning security, access to more feats in melee, like improved trip/disarm. Wisdom: this goes hand and hand with intelligence for many reasons. Part of your job is to protect the red wizards, so you need to be able to spot danger before it comes, using skills like Spot and Listen to be in constant awareness of your surroundings. If you are a straight fighter, youll have to cross class these skills. Plus decent wisdom helps out your Will saves. Im sure the REd Wizard would be more than a bit fussy if his guard gets charmed and starts attacking him. Feats and skills are pretty much up to you, as despite the picture of the Thayan Knight, there is no real set of guidelines for the Knights. Obviously a huge man in spikey black platemail is more intimidating than a bowman, but that doesnt mean he is any more effective or deadly. |

It can quickly lose its luster, and the knight may find not being a fully independent character isn't what they really want. Of course if your DM isn't **** about switching characters every so often, then you can just roll a new one :) |

Hell make the 2 of them brothers, One gifted w/the physical (the knight) the other the mental (wizard). Then you can play these 2 easy as pie, esp if you have a brother of your own. - you don't let other people start crap w/your brother - you protect eachother no matter what - sibling squabbles - the older one should be the wizard, compounding the higher power/more respect the wizard should recieve. On a character note i would HIGHLY recommend a 3 level dip into Devoted Defender for the Knight to truely add flavor and defensive power to his roll. I would love to play this type of set up...blood is thicker than water ya know. ps: i have a bro, we're good buds, he's older. |
