well I'm jumping in to a pre-existing campaign in january and I'm having trouble with what I should play. I don't want to be uber broken powerful but I definitely don't want to die after 1 die roll (yes it happened last time I played with these guys).

so does anybody have any serious suggestions for a race/class combo that's maybe a bit out in left field but could be fun and effective? my ideas are things like a lizardfolk paladin or a pixie rogue..

I've been meaning to run a Neanderthal Druid. You could try that out. It's not something that many people would expect, but it's thematically appropriate and the racial traits aren't that bad for a Druid. (The Con bonus is pretty good, the Int penalty is only a little painful, and the Str bonus and Dex penalty don't really matter after level 6.)

Out of morbid curiosity, how'd you die after one roll?

rofl... well short story even shorter, npc's don't use attack rolls instead we have to beat a set attack value with a d20 plus AC bonuses. anything but a 1 and I would have been ok.. guess what I rolled.. btw I hate monsters that automatically initiate grapples. I needed an unmodified 35 on a d20 to break free.

so there you have it. I rolled one die and I died... no pun intended.

just thumbing through some books and noticed gray elf in MM 1. never seen anybody run one in this edition.

And the other characters didn't have a chance to get you out before the monster killed you? Once a Tendriculos swallowed two of my party members whole, and we managed to knock it out before they were finished off.

They're used in a lot of theoretical builds going for maximum Intelligence. In a practical build, they'd probably make good Wizards or Psions. Never tried one, though.

Or rogues.

What about a Troglodyte Barbarian? With an over-the-roof CON, your Stench ability can give some serious headache to your foes. Technically, you would affect the other PCs as well, but if they successfully save sooner in the day, they are ok when the fight break...
