| streydog8008-07-05, 05:09 PM | What is a ranger eh? well I would have to classify a ranger as a fighter who has sacrificed true mastery of weapons to develop survival and non-combat skills. You could even go so far as to say they sacrificed general combat prowess to specialize in defeating specific creatures that the ranger would have a specific hatred for. Rangers are the masters of cunning and the use of their environment during battle. Not stand alone fighters but they excell at giving a Fighter of a Barbarian the kind of support they need to do what they do more efficiently. It may not look like it a first but with the balance of decent combat skills and good amounts of skill points rangers are a very versatile class. I hope that gives you a bit of a better I dea of what they do. Wesley |

Some real-life examples would be "elefant hunter", "ghost hunter", "bounty hunter". There is a sense of independence about them. He or she is often a go-aloner (einzelgaenger/einzelgaengerin... how do you translate this, someone?). A scout. Often obsessed; always focussed. If you are familiar with Tolkien's books, then Halbarad and Aragorn were rangers. But check your "Player's Handbook" for more details, and ask you DM for this means for your campaign. |

| Dreaming Bard08-08-05, 01:25 PM | (in my opinion) You are complicating the issue, people. (no offence is meant) A Ranger is simply a hunter. That's all. Just a hunter. Specific examples and exceptions can be looked at all day long but at the end of the day if I had to describe the ranger in one word it would be... hunter. Yup. Hope that little tangent helps some. |
| Sluagh08-08-05, 02:14 PM | Hunter is probably the best description, perhaps with the idea of "woodsman" added in; they're trackers, masters of moving through the wilderness unseen, of surviving off the land. As such, they're people of specialized knowledge (of the natural environment, the creatures around them, etc) and many skills related to survival and hunting (ie. tracking, moving quietly, finding food and water). Good, well rounded character class; skilled and fighting with a cunning, clever style, sometimes somewhat wild in motion/personality. |
| braindead34508-09-05, 01:27 AM | I would consider the ranger class to be the equivilent of modern day military special forces (The French Forgein Legion, U.S. Army Airborne Rangers, U.S. Navy SEALS, etc.)-specialize training in survival skills and combat. |
