My monk in our upcoming campaign is planning on taking the vow of poverty. I'm looking for some good story ideas for why he'd actually take it?

Any thoughts?

Perhaps did his village suffer from famine when he was young, and all the village kept on sharing every bit of food. Then later in his life, he moved to the city, and he was shocked of the way people in general (and especially nobles) were wasting food.

There is also the story of St-François-d'Assise (don't know the english name). When he was young, he went to war, but was made prisonner by the opposing clan. In jail, some prisonners were sick or injured, and the only thing he could do was to make them smile. At the end of the war, when he was released, he was shocked of the materialism around him, and he began to live a more natural life. Many young peoples joinned him, and they started the Franciscain Order.

maybe he took it because he realized the limitations of relying on material goods, and the benefits of looking in to yourself for strength. Sounds monklike to me.

He might have seen an entire village go "mad" from greed.

Perhaps he was originally a "robber baron"/capitalist who got money every which way he could. After his elven trophy wife left him for another rich guy, he became furious and started throwing his massive amount of possessions around his castle/mansion. He then has an epiphany and realizes that wealth has no purpose and that happiness can be gleaned from the joy of others. He changes his name so something long and complicated and gives away all of his treasure/statues/food to the people of whatever town/city he is from. After he spends a while starving himself, he falls asleep and has a vision of a female deity no one has heard of before. This is his own personal deity, and the main inspiration for why he does things. Nobody knows if it actually is a deity or simply a hallucination caused by scavenging too many mushrooms and/or berries. But he follows the path all the same.

There's a character concept inspired by four cups of espresso :D
