| Sarcastus11-02-05, 06:45 PM | We just found out that in order to get the information we needed to defeat the BBEG in our next session, our Cleric sacrificed her eyes and is now blind. Not without some mercy, the God heightened her other senses to the point where she essentially has the homebrew feat Blind Combat Casting (Blind Fighting + Combat Casting). While she can still do damage if placed in a room with a fight going on, she is still blind. This girl loves to roleplay and as I know this player will - take it to the hilt in roleplaying the fact she is blind, and making the rest of us miserable with, "what's going on, who are we talking to? What color is the symbol of death you stared at? Is the Wizard good looking, yadda, yadda, yadda..... Ok - She is considering taking a level of Monk to see if the DM will allow that to act as compensation for her blindness and allow her character to develop her senses enough so as to at least be aware of her surroundings and function almost normally. I'm advising against it only because as of right now, she is our most powerful caster in the group and of course, the healer and I don't want her to lose any levels of casting. Now - the question is - what kind of feat, skill, magic item or combination thereof can we try to acquire for her that will compensate for this? Since we have a base of operations near a local group of Druids, I was considering a torc or amulet of Blindsight (with DM's approval, of course). Any ideas would be soooooo appreciated. |

There is an example of a character in a forgotten realms novel, I forget which one, where a cleric loses his sight but is in turn able to see magic, along the lines of detect magic or arcane sight. Check the wording if you play RAW, it may allow for use despite the loss of natural sight. even seeing magical auras is better than nothing. On a side note I had a wizard who sacrificed his vision in order to regain his magic (was taken away by shar, then replaced by shadow magic) Several months of study allowed him to develop a system of brail for spells and he had a spell that granted him blind sight but kept his brail spell book as a safety thing, no one would be able to read his spells. It can be annoying but if the cleric is small or light enough put her in the back pack of the biggest fighter and tell her to heal on comand. :) better than potions, if a little heavier |

| erbmjw11-03-05, 05:57 AM | I think the DM and player would rule out regeneration because she willingly sacrificed her eyes to her own god!{ unless I am reading that wrong} I think you need to get her used to the fact that she will no longer see in color - after that - everything else should be workable with feats, spells and items. |

| ashcat_lt11-03-05, 03:56 PM | 2 psionic ideas 1)Take a level of psychic warrior and get the powere synesthete(XPH p134). She gets a bonus psionic or combat feat in the process and only loses one caster level. 2)24,000 gp for a Third Eye, Sense(XPH p177). Much better than lousy boring eyes, I think. |
| Rowan_Whispercloak11-04-05, 05:52 AM | One word: Quest. Have the character do some quest to earn her vision back. |
| Sarcastus11-04-05, 02:34 PM | Hey, Glad to see the responses. The Blindfold may be viable, but we are in a post war era which makes magic items a bit scarce. But, to take a cue from Rowan_Whispercloak, a quest to get one may be helpful as the Cleric refuses to make her sacrifice moot by even asking for her eyes back from her god at a later date. Yeah, the DM specified that no heal or regeneration from anyone or anything other than the god itself will give her, her eyes back. I do wish I could go the psionic route, I wouldn't be Druid if I could. DM has specified no psionics - but he also conceded that he would also not use any psionic monsters on us either- whew! I hate brain sucking Illithids! I'll look up the Blindsight and see if there is a way to modify it into a constant spell or see if she'll accept the blindfold and we can double team the DM. If you have any other ideas, I'm most anxious to hear them as we play again this Sunday. Thanks all! :) |
| erbmjw11-05-05, 01:36 AM | Just noticed - she saved your entire party with the sacrifice .... The GM should make a requirement for the return of her sight - your surviving party members all have to assist ( go with her ) on the quest - without telling her why you *must* go! So she is given a quest by her God. The deity also tells her she must use the Torc of Blindsight which she must return to the Druids and never use after she has finished the quest. When she finishes the quest and returns the torc - her eyes start to regenerate - the GM may even give her some extra vision based abillty because her deity approves of her actions. If she does not finish the quest, or return the torc, or if a party members tells her why they are helping; she remains blind forever and no magic { except divine intervention} will ever help her regain her eye sight ;) So a quest for her with no known or expected reward but secretly your party members are given a choice to repay her sacrifice and gain a reward for her alone. Your GM should like that :) |
