Warning! Another long post. Not quite as long as the last though.

A companion in a future campaign for Thurt (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=13682765#post13682765), Remmin will be played by a friend. Most likely he'll become an arcane trickster who travel in a unit of Knights Phantom.

“Who am I? That’s a good question.”

“Well lets see. I’ve been 3 different Brelish commanding officers, 2 tutors in a school for mages, 5 bandits, and young man growing up in a small village in Aundair.”

“No, I’m not being a smart-ass, it’s just that that’s part of who I am. I suppose I’d be best off starting at the beginning. If we’re going to be stuck together for a while you have a right to know who you’re traveling with.”

I was born in a small village in Aundair. My parents moved there shortly after my birth and only dad, mom, and myself knew what I was. See dad may have been human but mom only looked that way. I inherited mom’s power and it was hell on them keeping a baby changling a secret in their house when I was an infant. I grew up quickly though and they taught me not to let others know what I was. Unfortunately for them that meant to me that I had a secret, and a powerful ability. I used to practice my power all day long, turning into the other children and then fooling their parents. And I was good at it too.

Like most villages in those days, though, the war eventually interrupted daily life on the farm. A band of brigands, mostly ex-soldiers and deserters, found our little village and decided it ought to be theirs. The adults formed up a militia and dad wound up leading them in fighting the bandits off. Turns out he was a captain till he met mom and decided to retire. Problem was that the bandits had a strong leader of their own and things dragged out. It was almost a year and a half before we were able to get a bunch of mercenary diplomats down to our village and get a truce established. Fortunately the leader of the bandits couldn’t hold his people to fighting when offered a chance at new homes and lives. Village became a town with all the new settlers and dad wound up the town sheriff.

I got something else out of the deal though. I got a desire to be a part of the larger world. I was tired of hiding my talents and I was tired of small town life. I headed out at 15 and tried to join up with the army. I was too young even with the need for soldiers but I was determined. I followed units around working in the inevitable camps that form up behind them. I would work as a cook, at horse groomer, anything so long as I had a chance to see more of the world. I got to know the soldiers and the nation. Aundair was full of little villages like mine. Places that had been around for generations and that, often as not, didn’t ever see much of the outside world. The people were fighting for homes that had belonged to their great-great-great-grandparents long before the war even started. I also learned about what it took to fight. It took strength and drive. Above all you had to be willing to give everything.

After living like this for a few years and convincing the soldiers to train me to fight when I was old enough I heard about “Aundair’s secret weapon” units that combined magecraft with a soldier’s training. I left the camps behind and slipped across enemy borders. I traveled to Morgrave in Breland and sought out training in the mystic arts. I learned about powers beyond my youthful imagination. I studied for years there and when I knew enough I got myself teleported back to Aundair. There I joined the Knights Phantom. My skills as a changling and mage were enough to get me into the group as a specialist even if I wasn’t strong enough to qualify on my own. They would operate for weeks at a time behind enemy lines and eventually they came to rely on me to falsify and deliver orders to enemy units.

I didn’t get many missions before the war ended. When it did I sought out Thurt, an old friend I had made back as a boy when we were still fighting brigands back home and whom I had run across again at Morgrave. I had planned on asking for a position with his family since they ran the biggest merc company around but it turned out he was traveling on his own so we joined up and started traveling together.

Cool character, and an interesting foil for Thurt!

Youve listed his motivations for adventuring as seeing the wilder world and such, but what else motivates him? Does he one day want to return home and openly walk through his home town, showing all what he truly is? Does he even want to return home at all, or does he just want to wonder around the world and see as much as he can?

Thurt helped him out in the past, does he see himself indebted to him or does he see himself as Thurt's equal?

Thurt seemed very focused on diplomacy and such while Remmin seems more focused on the trickery side of negotiations, how will the two's different approach affect their relationship?

Somehow I knew you'd be the first to respond.:P

He left home wanting to see the wilder world. Now he's come to see how many villages and town, many cities and nations, work together to build a greater whole. He still thinks of that small village as home but doesn't think of going back too often. He still wants to see much of the world but now he appreciates that he has a duty to protect those smaller villages and towns. He still tends to think more of people and communities than of nations and politics.

Thurt helped him out in the past, does he see himself indebted to him or does he see himself as Thurt's equal?

Remmin is every man's equal and every man's copy. He can always find a way to get things done and he proved it in the war. He isn't really indebted to Thurt and neither of them sees things that way. Their past encounters have been friendly but in neither of the two did either one of them provide the other a service he wouldn't have provided any other man. Remmin does respect Thurt, especially for his ideals of maintaining peace wherever possable but the two often argue over the place and value of the nobility. Thurt on the other hand respects Remmin's skill and capability but is often confounded by his lack of respect for protocol and position not to mention his independence from others.

Thurt seemed very focused on diplomacy and such while Remmin seems more focused on the trickery side of negotiations, how will the two's different approach affect their relationship?

Thats one I really can't answer until and unless play starts. Thurt vastly prefers dignity and set forth rules. Remmin on the other hand never 100% grew out of that boyhood trickery. Thurt thinks every problem can be solved without violence on the condition that both sides wish to avoid such. Remmin tends to assume the other side of any given argument would prefer to end things with a fight (physical or verbal). Thurt tends to be fairly open with his intent and give fair warning while Remmin always prefers distraction and obfuscation. The result unfortunately Is hard to predict in any given situation. One day Thurt may have Remmin gathering information to give himself the upper hand in negotiations the next Remmin may be arguing to avoid negotiations altogether and simply take what is needed.

I'm very curious to see what others would bring to the table. As a result I'm opening this thread up to more than just commentarry on the character. (though such is still very much welcome.)

I want to ask what character others on the board would play if they were to join these two in a campaign. (without knowing any details of the campaigns plot.)

I'm working out the kinks in a charcter now, he's not fully fleshed out yet though.

Basically he is a neutral good, half elf bard who focuses heavily on social interaction, but mainly in the area of being an interpreter (max ranks in speak languages). He doesnt like comabt and would prefering to talk his way out of situations, wether by diplomacy, intimidate or bluff, he's open to using all 3.

As for his bardic ability, it would be focusing on oratory and or/storytelling (same thing?) with him telling stories from the past (legends and myths) or just making up a story on the fly.

He'd be carefree and interested in experiencing new people, places and cultures and be openly accepting of any creature.

Ill start a thread up on him with ive finished him on paper.

2 bards and an arcane trickster... something tells me it wouldn't be a heavy combat game.

I was going to suggest my chaotic good, grappling focused half-orc barbarian, follower of kord (who had vow of poverty/peace/non-violence) but nobody seemed to like him.

I recon theyd have gone well together :P

Actually in a less combat-oriented game he might well fit nicely.
