| Twilly07-12-03, 12:28 PM | I want to create a dwarven fighter. Now I wander, what Rituals, Customs, Sayings and/or Traditions do Dwarves have (according to you)? Here are a few I made up my self: 1. A dwarf is considered an adult when he can hold an Dwarven Battleaxe in one hand. 2. Your name is determined by the clan elders; the elders decide which name suits you best. I have more but I need some time to translate them to proper English. Please tell me what Dwarven Rituals, Customs,... are according to you. |

When introducing yourself to someone you don't like or don't trust, you would say your first name, then "of the Dwarves," rather than saying your clan name. As a DM, I'd require some kind of Knowledge check or Sense Motive check to even pick up on the subtle hostility (unless said to another dwarf, but that's probably just not done). Other customs that I've played with are things like... Distinguishing yourself with a finely woven braid in either the hair or beard Biting objects to denote approval (as done with gold), such as biting the head of an axe as a final step in appraising it Carrying money in forms other than coin, such as gemstones, gold bars, or large gold nuggets Tradition-minded dwarves should have at least one rank in a Craft skill, and have at least one personal object they've made themselves (favorites include: beard tie, belt buckle, a decorative tip on the end of a weapon, jewelry). |

While it is known that dwarves are good combatants, they would rather create than destroy. So while to others some things are considered weapons, to dwarves they are primarily tools. For example, the hammer is used to shape metal and drive stakes. And "to find your enemy, raise your tool in defiance [and typically the right hand] and look in a mirror; your enemy will stare back at you." But sometimes combat is inevitable, a fact of dwarven society. Hostilities can come from anywhere, from without and within. Raiders pillage, nations invade, and clans fued. And when this happens, dwarves cry out "look to the left of your tools". |
