For an upcoming game, I am thinking of playing a rogue, but I am not sure which type of rogue I should play. I would like some ideas. I'll be starting at level 1, so nothing too advanced, and the campaign will not be evil, so no assassin. Here are some that I've thought of:

- a merchant apprentice who is scoping out new territory for his master's business.
- a street rat, living on his own in a city who decides to expand his horizons.
- the child of a thieves guild member who betrays the guild, and in retribution, the guild promises to assassinate the member's family.
- a Robin Hood type character, a thief who "redistributes" wealth.
- an initiate to a clan of ninjas (using the Ninja class from the Complete Adventurer), who's duty it is to protect the innocent without being seen.

Any other ideas? It doesn't have to use the rogue class, but I would like something of that style, so basically rogue, ninja, possibly scout.

What kind of rogues have been played over the years? Surely people play more than just theives with the rogue class?

Any of those ideas could work. You could also look into the spy, "James Bond" type character if you wanted to multiclass into Bard.

My current character is a rogue/monk. He started out as a street thug who was consistantly getting arrested for petty theft, starting fights, intimidating local businessmen, etc. etc.. Nothing too extreme - no murder or arson or anything like that - but definitely enough crookery to get him in trouble. The only reason he managed to get out of it all was because his mother was a well respected high-priestess of the temple who managed to pull some strings if he ever REALLY got into trouble. He was a classic spoiled little punk, a "rebel without a cause" type who hated the fact that everyone expected him to become this great asset to the community because of his family history. When his mother killed herself, however, he felt responsible for her death, and he vowed to straighten up. So he joined a monastary to try to set him on the right path, vowing to leave his old life behind. It's been fun so far trying to juggle the initial reaction he has to certain situations with the newfound discipline that he's trying to now live by.

An expert archer who appreciates the finer things in life. One who gets what he wants through persuasion. One who the rich men trust and the rich women want to (and often get to) sleep with. After winning the trust of the noblemen and getting the hearts of the daughters, he silently steals everything valuable in the manor without their knowledge (well, most of the time the daughters are in the know but would never dream of betraying their lover, because he is soooo good). Some times thefts will go unnoticed for months or years because he leaves near perfect forgeries behind.

Basically he is like a gentleman spy tyype of rogue.
