I decided to play a trumpet Archion from SS in a return to the temple game. Our games are geared to both RP aswell as combat fun; i know how powerfull the class is so i wont comment on that here.

I do wanted to get some feedback on how i wanted to play the character ...

This character is about age 15. He was found by his folks in a gutter with a trumpet around his neck. It soon became apparant that he was very different, he didnt sleep and cry like most babies.

At the age of very young he felt the calling to be a righteous one and joined paladinschool at age 11. Funny enough, he could beat most apprentice paladins but he never saw he got the same inate powers as the apprentices had ... he had other powers.

Growing wings, being more powerfull, casting as a cleric, etc. Yet he desperately wanted to become a paladin and a champion of good. Eventually the trainers at the school told him to go adventuring to find his true path.

Eventually he ended up at the party in RttToEE. However, at a certain point the party was forced to work with a group of evil characters (semi evil orcs who helped the party defeat more evil clerics). My character didnt find it out until afterwards, and it made him think. (He has int 14 at this point; i have to RP it). Now he is in doubt; he has seen the 'good' outcome from a temporary alliance with lesser evil agains greater evil ....

What should i do?
- let him decide this is not the way a war should be waged and do some 'atonement'
- let him grow over his paladinideas towards being a bit more liberal LG?

Thanx for your opinions :)

You *Are* Good. Not just figuratively speaking but literally, your very flesh is made of goodness and Law, not to mention that archons tend to be very leery of unrepentant evil beings (note that evil creatures are welcome in Celestia... as long as they're looking to mend their ways)

Thanx for your opinions :) Firstly, and I'm sure you know this, an LG character doesn't have to be stupid.

You've said your character is intelligent, and his actions obviously have to reflect that. I would consider the following statements, and see how your character would respond:

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

No one is so evil that he cannot be redeemed.

All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

One bad apple spoils the lot.

Well, okay, some of those are a bit obscure, but thinking about things in terms other than the alignment system of D&D can often help you get a better handle on it.

I do hope this is helpful, but I suspect I might just be raving mad...

Unless your character believes in slaughtering all evil beings (which I know some do... though that is a seperate issue), I see nothing wrong with a LG character or a celestial making a temporary alliance for the greater good.

Remember, the thing about Paladins not associating with evil is in the PALADIN CODE, not the description of LG. While the description of celestials describes them as the enemy of demons and devils, it says nothing about evil in general. So it's really up to your character as to whether he'd rather follow the ideals of the Paladin (which he is not obligated to), or forge a different path.

The trumpet archons aren't out there to annihilate evil. That's the hound archon's job.

Thanx for your replies guys, i really appreciate the other insights.

My major problem however, is that this Archon wanted to become a paladin (which he can do at level 21; i know; its RP fun for me).

But he has seen that the paladincode can be restricting in how effective to battle evil; so he now kind of has to choose to live like a paladin or to give up and to simply be 'only' LG.

I guess i'll roleplay the struggle for a bit before choosing ;)
