How would you roleplay with a ring of sustenence? I hear it's a fairly popular item, but aren't really sure how to play it out.

[tongue in cheek]I would recomend a slightly more traditional character. But, if you still want to be a ring of sustanence, I would strongly recomend getting a personality quirk, like making wise cracks a lot or hitting on other inanimate objects. This is an intelligent item right? Also, do sit on a party member's finger or do you hover somehow (if you do hover, why does it matter that you're a ring of sustanence?).[/tongue out of cheek]

You don't eat, you only sleep a little bit. I'd say you should find somehting to do when everyone else is asleep. Mostly this means you'll be taking more watches than your party members. But it can also mean that you spend your new free time in otherways, perhaps you go to all night parties whenever you're in a big city. People who don't know about the ring might thing your very strange, but usually this isn't a big issue unless your in a very low magic world or somehting like that. The ring is really a fairly discreat item, you wear it and you aren't hungry and you don't need to sleep as much.

Perhaps your ring has an unusual side effect on your character making him/her paranoid and jumpy.

In all honesty though there is no special way to role play a character with a ring of sustenance. If the character wants to keep the ring a secret then you'll want a character to be able to bluff and act as well as coming up with a personality trait that the character can act upon to keep it a secret, like after they have rested and wake up they start acting paranoid until everyone is awake or until its daylight.

Develope a hobby. I played a rogue once who taught himself to count cardsand other card game cheats on watch because he had a curse that made him not sleep.

Eventually, he started building things out of readily available materials. The party would wake up to find armor hanging on branches in mock battle with one another.

It was a lot of fun too, until the sorceress fireballed one when she woke up in the middle of an ambush.

Put a few points into craft (wood-carving) or a similar skill. Besides, it'd be funny when another PC sees the beautifully crafted chess set in your backpack. Especially if they don't know about it.

"Where'd you get THAT?"
"Oh... I made it."
"When!?"
"Eh... I've been working on it for the past couple days."

Perhaps you start to lose any taste for food you used to have. Things you enjoyed no longer appeal as much, and things you hated no longer seem as bad as they did before.

Perhaps in time you may even go so far as to have trouble eating food at all, becoming wholly dependent on your ring.

*shrug* Just a couple suggestions.

*shrug* Just a couple suggestions. Cool ideas. I have a character with one of these rings also, and he's on his way to becoming a Void Incarnate. I think these would be fun quirks to add to him.

Stop sleeping, but don't stop snoring.
