in one of my games the DM is trying to make RPing a major factor of the game, in this game im playing a Wizard (generalist) no cracked out special features even though several were made available, EXCEPT, i chose the spellfire wielder feat. yes i already spoke with the DM about this and he said aslong as it doesnt become too overpowering or unbalancing i can keep it / the character. sofar ive done a good job at not being too powerfull, i also had some decent stat rolls, 18, 16, 14, 14, 13, 11.

my feat selection was as follows:
Spellcasting Prodigy
Luck of Heroes
Spellfire Wielder (I took a flaw from UA, -4 spot, -4 listen)
Scribe Scroll (Wizard Bonus)

now onto the roleplaying aspect (brief history):
I was raised outside Silverymoon as a farmer. One visit into silverymoon when i was 14 with my father Alustriel crossed out path as we stopped and paid respect she noticed me, she came over and began speaking to myself and my father about the great potential i have within me. she half requested half demanded that i stay and train in silverymoon. she promised my father that i would be under her care. my father left with no other option agreed, and so began my years of training. First i was sent to the temple of Mystra where i learned from the priests of the weave and of her being one with the magic that is cast and of her love for the magic. i was then sent to the magical arts academy where i continued my studies as a wizard and thus began my carreer as a Wizard. Shortly after i turned 24 and graduated from the lower schooling at the academy Alustriel told me that i was to set off into the world to make a name for myself and to first hand learn the ways of magics use in daily life.

So off i went into the world, the campaign began with the DM grouping us all into a town in the dale lands.

Now, as to the roleplaying parts, im trying to play the wizard with the mentality that as i grow in power and have stronger and stronger magic available to me i should strive to use it less and less. also, what i want to do is develop some spells of my own each level if i could. but with each new book that WotC releases theres more spells in and thus less spells for me to come up with on my own. if anyone has any suggestions about how to make spells or some ideas for changing certain spells please post them :)

Well, sounds ok to me. One thing that you might try, instead of making your own spells, just use something like the Spell Compendium and just ask your DM if whichever spells you pick out of it can be exclusive to you. One thing to remember is that there are rules for making or modifying spells, both with meta-magic feats and prestige classes. But for the most part, making spells is a high lvl activity. After all, it's kinda like the difference between using a computer and making one yourself. While both require knowledge, one requires a far deeper understanding. The same applies to magic. Your character knows how to harness magic when using formula already set down, but even at lvl 5, you mage probably won't know why everything does what it does.

i like that bagelbyheart, thanks, i just thought that when a wizard levels and they get to add two spells to their spellbook for free it represented their continueous study and development of spells and spell knowledge. but i guess i can just argue that i add some spells from specific scrolls i have (without paying the cost aslong as they are part of my two per level) representing my understanding of spells rather than just knowing how to invoke the power but actually understand how it develops and conforms.

does anybody else have any suggestions / ideas for my background story or any ideas on how to RP this wizard?

You can do that with item creation, too(at later levels). Work with your DM with adding certain functions to known items out of the DMG or PGtF (or the Magic Item Compendium, if you've got it). Innovation doesn't all way mean making something entirely new, it may just be a new use for an old invention.

Oh, and be really P.O'd at the evil or lazier mages you run across. The guys who toss fireballs like they're confetti. Phrases like 'The right spell at the right moment is worth an entire spellbook'. And perhaps a bit of reverence for Mystra, as well.

Hope this helps. :)
