| Omonoth03-22-04, 05:39 AM | I rescently joined an online game after not roleplaying for an entire year and Iīm having some proplems with getting in character and how I should roleplay my character so Iīd like to hear some advice about that. My character is a Human Wizard 1/Cleric 1 of Oghma (if my DM allows me to, Iīll use the cloistered cleric variant from UA) with the following ability scores: Str 10, Dex 14, Con 12, Int 16, Wis 15, Cha 10, heīs 18 years old and of neutral alignment. Heīs 5Ļ8' tall and weights 160 lbs. He has the Cosmopolitan (sense motive) feat and has maxed out sense motive (if my Dm allows me to be a cloistered cleric Iīll also take 4 ranks each in Bluff and Diplomacy). I would appreciate if you stated if your advice is especially for a normal cleric or for a cloistered cleric as the ranks in bluff and diplomacy would alter how he should be played. His domains as a normal cleric are Knowledge and Charm and would be Knowledge, Charm, and Trickery if i get to be a cloistered cleric. Bellow is my characters background. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ HISTORY / BACKGROUND Ebermior was the first born son of Tylloch and Zetandra Sehmodosa, a middle-class couple who ran an inn in the amnian capital Athkatla. Growing up in the big city, Ebermior never had any real close friends and from an early age he preferred to read books or listening to stories told by his parents rather than playing with other children. This didnīt worry his parents as it kept him from the often dangerous street of the city and they grew very fond of the little boy sitting in his room reading books or listening to tales of his mothers days in the army or his fathers run inns with the law. Listening to the guests at the inn was also something Ebermior liked to do and he became quite good at telling when they were speaking untruthfully, something he was also instructed in by his father. He had a trouble free although somewhat distant relationship with his two year younger sister Carwyn who preferred playing before her brothers bookish interests and thought him altogether boorish. The stories about wizard and such interested him greatly but he was fascinated rather than repulsed by it as most amnish people are and sometimes he dreamed of becoming one someday, but he knew such training would be hard to get in magic fearing Amn and he thought of it as no more than dreams. He was very excited when a traveling wizard stayed at the inn for a week when he was ten. The wizard was waiting for the rest of his adventuring friends and Ebermior studied him every day and was happy to know that at least some wizards werenīt the evil warlocks described in his books. Something that also caught his attention when the wizards friends finally arived was the respect they showed him, but what caught his attention even more was that everyone in the group listened just as much to the wise words of their cleric. Neither Ebermior nor the rest of the family were particularly religious, his father praying to Waukeen on occasion and his mother sometimes sending a prayer to Tempus for her old friends in the army. Ebermior now became interested in the dieties of the world and in his studies of them, he found Oghma the Lord of Knowledge to be the one who suited him the best. Luckily for Eberior there was actually an old cleric of Oghma named Dylmaris Ergodon living not far from the inn, and one sunny day during Ebermiors eleventh summer he walked into the inn, requesting to speak with Tylloch. What Dylmaris wanted was pretty clear, he had heard about the gifted child with a hunger for knowledge and insight in other peoples thoughts and wanted to see if he was worthy and interested in learning more about the Binder of What Is Known. Though his parents were sceptic at first, the joy that the normally quiet boy displayed after hearing about the proposal gave them little choice but to let him study under the old priest. Dylmaris soon found Ebermior more than worthy and Ebermrior then began the studies that would one day make him a cleric. Ebermior was anounced as a full-fledged cleric and given his holy symbol by Dylmaris on his seventeenth birthday, his joy was great but it wouldnīt last for long. Only a week later, disaster struck. When Ebermior came back to his teachers home early in the morning after spending a few days with his family to celebrate, he found him murdered. To say that the house showed signs of struggle would be a ridiculous understatement; everything in the building had been smashed and so had Dylmaris also been. At first Ebermior didnīt know who to suspect but his father had an old friend within the shadow thieves who had owed him a big favor since their youth. The friend ordered a few of his men to see if they could get information about the murder from the local residents where the city guard had failed, they could. It turned out Dylmaris had been killed by three men; two muscle bound ruffians and man who could bee nothing else than a cleric of Talos. Ebermior now set out after the killer and has been on the hunt for almost two years and has now learned the talosian priests name; Wylkir Ordos. In his search, he was accompanied for a year by an adventuring wizard from Waterdeep named Clausiant Irmatelis. Clausiant traveled with Ebermior out of convenience at first; they were going in the same direction for the moment, but soon he grew fond of the younger adventurer and decided that he didnīt really have anything better to do at the time. During that year Ebermior learned much from the more seasoned traveler and was also thaught the basics of wizardry. Alas the companionship was over as soon as it had started when Clausiant five months ago learned that his father had died in an accident and that he was needed back home in Waterdeep. Ebermior was saddened by this but had no time to dwell on it as he had to continue his hunt. Unfortunately Ebermior has now come to a dead end in the dragon coast region after following a false lead and has decided to give up the hunt for a while to try to learn more about the world and to gain the skills he will need to avenge his mentors killer. He doesnīt seek to fight the talosian church as a whole but is only interested in finding Wylkir and his two henchmen. ___________________________ Family: Father: (Male CN Human Rogue 2, age 46) Tylloch inherited the inn from Ebermiors's grandfather when he died twentyfive years ago. In his youth he was a bit of a scoundrel and lived a fairly dangerous life on the city streets, he might have become a shadow thief had things turned out different, but his father's death signaled the end of that lifestyle. Mother: (Female N Human Warrior 3, age 45) Zetandra was born to a low-ranking military officer and grew up to be a soldier herself, she also cooked food for the other soldiers in her troupe. She met Tylloch when she was on leave from the army and though it saddened her father and the other soldiers she decided to leave the army and marry the carefree innkeeper instead, now working as the inn's cook. Little Sister: (Female N Human Expert 1, age 16) Carwyn works as a waitress at the family inn and is certain to take over as innkeeper when her parents pass away. She and Ebermior get along fairly well but are not very close. ___________________________ Friend: Clausiant Irmatelis (Male CN Human Wizard 4, age 32). |

He seems like a good and friendly person, not someone for trickery and treachery. You could play Ebermior as a person that is very openminded and always eager to learn. He will probably enjoy tales told by the bards that wonder the lands. After a performance he might give a generous reward, and then try to get some information about this Wylkir. As you describe him, he seems to be someone that can listen to others. He seems to be patient, and kind. If he catches someone lying to him, he might listen with attention and then ask a few questions or make a few remarks that make the liars hands sweat. Leaving the liar in doubt if he fooled you. BTW, why do you have a 16 in intelligence as cleric? Isn't it better (stats wise) to swap intelligence and wisdom scores? 15 intelligence is still high. Or are you going to emphasize on the wizard class? |

Well really I didnīt think that the trickery domain was inherently malicious as Oghma and Boccob have the domain and both are neutral gods of knowledge. Garl Glittergold also has the trickery domain but heīs one of the most powerful of the good deities. And my character isnīt really that good, his alignment is neutral, and neutral characters can sometimes sacrifice/risk their lifes for family/country and his mentor did mean a lot to him and I plan on taking a not so saintly revenge on Wylkir if I get to catch him, including torture of some kind if I get a chance at that. But he does indeed like to listen to people and that thing you said: If he catches someone lying to him, he might listen with attention and then ask a few questions or make a few remarks that make the liars hands sweat. Leaving the liar in doubt if he fooled you. was good, I hadnīt thought of that, thanks! As for why Iīd take the trickery domain itīs mostly to get Bluff as a class skill, if youīre good at knowing when people lie you should know what others look for when trying learn if youīre lying or not. BTW, why do you have a 16 in intelligence as cleric? Isn't it better (stats wise) to swap intelligence and wisdom scores? 15 intelligence is still high. Or are you going to emphasize on the wizard class? I thought to focus on both classes, with the higher intelligence to show that he would have been better suited to be a Wizard at first but that the country he lived in made it impossible at that time, and later take the Mystic Theurge prestige class. Iīve heard that some people think this class is overpowered but I canīt really see that happening before epic levels. I mean, on level 7 (Wizard 3/Cleric 3/Mystic Theurge 1) Iīll still only be casting level 2 spells. |
