| NewBlood80809-20-07, 02:06 AM | I'm playing a level 2 Darfellan(stormrack) fighter, the same fighter Ive posted about on the character optimization boards. his name is Talika and he's the only survivor of a Sahuagin raid on his village.(to those of you who say this is cliche, i say shut the hell up) His father was the leader of the village, an accomplished warrior and devout worshiper of The Whale Mother, and being the heir to the throne so to speak he feels guilt and blames himself for the deaths of his family and friends. so basically, I've got two maxims for him to live by, but I feel like I need something more definitive. Maybe some personality traits, or certain mannerisms. the maxims I have are "drowning his sorrow in blood and rum" and "protecting The Whale Mother by systematically destryoing all Sahuagin" suggestions comments etc. please |

But... why does he blame himself for his families deaths? Did he actually fail to protect them (ie: ran away, was knocked out) or is it more or less one of those "feels sorry for himself" things? And i think its more or less his two maxims that are clique. There are hundreds of darfellan out there with that same background and same outlook on life. What makes your character different from them? Perhaps he was actually scared of becomming a leader and is thankfull that the attack happened, which makes him feel guilty but still a little thankfull? Perhaps he only wanted to become a leader so he had the freedom to do what he wanted, namely, leave the tribe and see the world. If you make your character the same as every other character, of course its going to be clique. Make them unique, make them interesting. |
| NewBlood80809-20-07, 03:18 AM | about the insults, Im just really tired of people hating on my ideas instead of giving me helpful criticism. thanks tho, I like the idea of being scared to rule. I was going for, he went after a scouting party spotted nearby, and he returned to find that the main force had attacked the village while he was gone. he's also incredibly devoted to the Whale Mother, like his father. In addition to his hatred of sea devils, he despises whalers, and those who abuse innocents. I was angling for The Punisher type of thing. or, maybe he could never get his father's aproval, which is why he tried to take on the scouting party alone. when that failed miserably, he fled to the high seas in hopes to redeem himself through adventure, and find a way to gain his deceased father's approval? |

This sounds like an interesting idea, he never got his fathers approval and when his actions failed, which resulted in his fathers death, he set out and tried to redeem himself. If this is the case, then perhaps id make the father constantly pop up as a ghost somehow, always looking at his son with disapproval or shame. Your character is constantly pushed forward to greater things in an attempt to appease his father. Again, i wouldnt make the death of Sahuagin his primary focus... perhaps its a means to getting his fathers approval, but nothing more, he shouldnt be fanatic about it. |

| Ell09-20-07, 03:38 AM | I have an idea, maybe you'll like that. Your character was Chaotic in times of youth and argued with his father constantly, because he felt restricted. On the day of the attack he got all teenager-ish again and stormed away, then decided to go "scouting". When he returned, he found his village was destroyed. He was so shaken, he's gone all the way to chaotic to lawful in one hour. So now he's sure that authority is there to be obeyed, because all it's acts are for the greater good. He's a self-control freak, too (he lost his temper and look what's happened). Don't drink. Don't laugh. Don't do anything that is considered "entertaining". He could also be sure that he was to die in that battle in his village, fighting to protect innocents. So now he's seeking the same death - that's why he's gone adventuring. Also, don't listen to anyone babbling about cliches. It's an art to take the well-known stereotype and make it come alive with good roleplaying. ;) |
