| Mjcarney12-15-05, 08:26 AM | Hi everyone, I've been playing AD&D for a while now but I've never really roleplayed a character. All my previous characters were very generic with no back story. So for my first attempt at roleplaying I've decided to create my characters personality or point of view of the world frist and then create the backstory. Personality: This character is male. He is an anarchist and has no loyalities (Choatic) He hates morality and sees them as false values (Evil) He believes the world is without truth (Nihilist) He believes life has no meaning (Existiential Nihilist) Backstory: Because he believes that life has no meaning, he killed himself upon reaching adulthood. I havn't decided how he kills himself yet or what happens to him when he does. I'm not really sure what happens when you die in the FR campaign setting so I could really use somehelp. |

So you might want to avoid that option. This character is male. He is an anarchist and has no loyalities (Choatic) He hates morality and sees them as false values (Evil) He believes the world is without truth (Nihilist) He believes life has no meaning (Existiential Nihilist) You seem to a good starting point for your character, but I'd think some more on how you plan to play your character. Off the top of my head: How does he act? Why does he act that way? Where did he learn his skills? Why has he become so disillusioned? How does he talk? What does he look like? Where did he grow up? What does this character fear more than anything else, if he does, indeed, fear at all? What role does this character serve in the party? Will this character fit in with the others? Does he have any key phrases? That's enough for now. Once you answer these questions you will no doubt have an idea of how to play your character. Oh and on last, very important question: What is your character's name? Hope I was helpful. :D |
| Mjcarney12-15-05, 05:59 PM | Thanks for the tips Dreaming Bard. As for the name I've decided on Bagdish Amuu, which I liked after going threw the Neverwinter Nights generator. Now Bagdish goes threw life almost reluctantly and is very removed, almost disinterested in his own fate. This is due to the fact that his value system is warped, in that he doesn't put any value on anything, including his own life. He hardly speaks as he is very unsocial and doesn't work well with others. However, he is an asset to the party because of his seemly endless courage, or at least what people assume to be courage. When in fact, he simply hates life and so he seeks out danger secretly hoping to die. Curiously, it is his self-loathing that gives him strength. As for his backstory, I wanted something that would explain or at least compliment what I wrote above. Thats why I wanted my character to commit suicide, or at least attempted suicide. So far, I have thought of several possible options. 1) The character stapped himself but didn't die and he has a disgusting scar on his belly. 2) The character killed himself and did die but he was raised by a cleric and the cleric magically enslaved him. 3) The character poisoned himself but didn't die and had a hallucenation of Talona, goddess of poison 4) The character killed himself and went to hell, where he was enslaved by some hellish minion. |
| Jon of the North12-15-05, 06:14 PM | I assume you're 1st level. What class? Well, 1st make sure you can play CE, some Gms might not allow it. Even if you can, make sure it fits the party. If you're the only Evil member, you'll end up in trouble. When I play, I'd rather play with a plainly played, boring but reliable N Wizard than a brilliantly played but backstabbing NE Wizard. just keep that in mind. Background Suicide Well, you could have committed suicide and been brought back to life by an CE Cleric/ god. Of course, for a first level character, this means you loss 1, possible 2, points of Con IIRC. If you're higher level then you lose a level. So if you really want this, check with your GM. I must say as a GM, if a player were to come to me and say "I want to lower my Con by two for background reason (explain background) and I don't want any bonuses in return." I would look on that player with favor. Of course, your GM might just shrug and say "OK, easier to kill you." Let's just go with a hanging, don't want your body in too bad shape. Now why were you raised? How bout, an evil Death God stopped your jouney to your final reward and said "You understand the waste and worthlessness of life. You shall serve me. I will return you to the despisable world, you will be one of my agents. A minor agent, but you will grow in power. Do well enough and your reward will be awe inspiring. Now go." Next thing you know, you'll waking up at your own funeral. Hilarity insues as you urge you family and friends to follow your example. Once the townpeople drive you out, you follow the commands of your new lord and off you go. Why adventure? Evil Death god told you to. You're looking for something worth living for. Got to pay the bills. You like ending the meanless lives of others. That's a good one, let's go with that. Little touches Try to add little details to your PC. What won't he do; is there a line he won't cross? What's he afraid of? He sneers at luxory, saying it's being at the top of a crapheap. That's all I got now, maybe more later. |
| Mjcarney12-16-05, 01:36 PM | Okay how's this: Bagdish Amuu was the son of an powerful orc chieftan and his human concubine. He was of the Tribe of Red Blood (I could use somehelp coming up with a better tribe name) and had a difficult childhood. His mixed heritage was viewed as a terrible weakness and had a difficult time finding his place in the tribe. He was educated in martial studies by his brother yet his initial training was slow. When Bagdish was 15 his brother said "come here half-breed and I will put you out of your misery" in frustration at Bagdish's lack of improvement. After hearing the remark Bagdish went into an increadable rage, not so much directed at his brother but at himself and his meaningless life and he gripped his great axe and charged at his brother, taking his brother up on the offer. Yet for all his mentors skill, Bagdish's self-loathing inspired rage overpowered his brother and he killed him. His rage played out, he gazed upon the corpse of his first kill and to his surprise, he found he didn't care, he felt no guilt, and he judged his brothers life, and all life, including his own, as without meaning. With this revelation Bagdish hung himself at a nearby tree. Back in the Orc's mountain home, the chieftain grew worried when his prized son didn't return. The chieftain gathered his bodyguards and the tribe shaman and went out in search of the boys. Upon finding the warrior teacher of the tribe killed by an greataxe and the Bagdish's corspe hanging from a tree they concluded that they were attacked by orcs. Few suspected that a half-breed could defeat the vetern prince, most believed that the prince died in battle and that Bagdish surrendered and was hung. In search for answers, the shaman called upon the Orc god Gruumsh to revive Bagdish and Gruumsh headed the shamans call. Thats all I got so far, tell me what you think |
