I'm trying to stick with the core books and make a character similar to a swashbuckler. I was thinking taking 1 level in Rouge, 2 levels in Bard, and 3 in fighter. I have no reason to beleive this would work, but I think it should.

-That sounds good, though the Bard part isn't really neccessary. A Fighter/Rogue seems pretty Swashbucker enough.

-I don't have any of those books, but in the campaign I am running, the characters are members of a Pirate crew. Most of the NPC pirates are Rogue/Fighter combinations, while one or two are Bard/Fighter combinations.

It seems to me that you should try to get into the Duelist core PrC as soon as possible, since that's basically the "core" version of the swashbuckler. Taking bard and rogue seems to delay entry into Duelist too much for my tastes. I'd go rogue 4/fighter 3 or something, then go into duelist.
