-Five years. I don’t hear a thing from him in five years and he brings me the news as if we speak daily. He always did have trouble with words like tact, perspective, and respect. Ah well, can’t say I blame the little runt either. I’m just glad he did the right thing for a change. And now that the burden is rest upon me, I wonder if I can measure up, do what he did, the way it needs to be done.

…

Some of my earliest memories are of our family travels to Korma so mom and dad could watch the games. I hated gladiators myself, found the matches without purpose and numbingly sadistic. Then again I just hate violence altogether no matter the reason. Heh, then again I did take to some of the female gladiators.

Wasn’t much better for my brother either. He was still a bit early to drool over the girls, so he occupied his time with other, less noble endeavors. Damn did we have fun later though. Those parties we went to, wow. Mom and dad went for the experience of the combat, but they didn’t mind the parties afterward. That was my saving grace through it all, the parents knew that the life was hard on us and did what they could. How the hell did I not see what was going on?

…

“We need to have a sit down, big man.” If your little brother EVER tells you this, run away. Fast as you can, run away, because the news won’t be good. Gone for five years and all the word he sends is that we need to have a sit down. I was working on a style adjustment during that month, was tough to just drop training and travel to meet him, but I knew it was serious. I had no idea.
After he told me, I think I yelled for at least an hour. How could they do this, with us right there most of the time? I don’t think I remembered how to breath for a while there I was so livid. I couldn’t grasp it, couldn’t wrap my head around this at all. But then again, I decided, I didn’t need to. I had a new focus now, something that I, coincidentally, seemed to be training for all these years. That focus would consume me. It had to, or there was no hope for any of the family I had left.

…

I left after a year or two of traveling. Although I didn’t approve, and to this day abhor, the violence, I recognized the purpose it served. From that life I created my newfound paradigm. Violence to quell violence. Power to suppress power. If I understood what it held and what it could do, I then could refuse it outright. Or so I thought.

The training was rigorous, the approach oft-times awkward and disheartening. The end goal, being able to prevent needless violence, served as my beacon. Now more than ever, I beg that it burn bright.

…

Three of us, now in a new part of the world, trying to lead a life that doesn’t call attention to what we smell like, let alone who we might be. With little brother off trying his damnedest to keep Redcloud off our trail, I wonder how long I will have before I am called. With what is now at stake, I wonder if this all isn’t just a warm-up for the death to come. Focus is my citadel, it is my life, and it will be my death.

…

He did well, fought well, died well. Now it is my turn. I pray it will not get past me, will not defeat me. The demons of our past must be kept from him. I will give all that I am to make sure he is kept well. I wonder if Halmyr will be proud? -
