Hi, I'll soon be playing a Thri-Kreen barbarian/scout. I'm the damage machine in the party. I've been reading some Dark Sun stuff I've found online and it says that Thri-Kreen have a pack mentality.

Beyond the initial intra-party struggle to determine the pecking order and who's the alpha (and the subsequent unquestioned loyalty to the pack), I'm having a little trouble conceiving how this guy will relate on a day-to-day basis, especially when it comes to NPCs.

Any thoughts?

If you can get it i recomend reading the darksun novel "crimson legion" the thri-kreen in their is very cool and how i imagine them to be.... waking his companions asking what they're doing since they dont sleep if asked to defend a female ask is she with eggs? since they dont see why else a member of the pack would get special treatment, complain when the wizard fireballs your enemies or worse yet disintigrates them "stop spoiling meat!" things like that. look at the http://athas.org/releases/ website they have some good stuff on thri-kreen

have fun

Fierce loyalty, hesitance to voice objections to something the rest of the party seems committed to.

I played a thri-kreen as just different. He viewed the non-thri-kreen as 'soft-shells' and so forth. Just tried to imagine what it was like to see things from the point of view of a large bug.

To add on what's being said: your character really is alien. Dwarves, gnomes, orcs, all have some vaguely human-like trait to them, sometimes exaggerated, but there's something there. Thri-kreen are insectile humanoids, and certain things about human nature should be thoroughly alien to him. Love, for one thing. Hate, for another. Jealousy, or any emotion, can at best be translated as "concern for the pack" to him. As a barbarian/scout, you know how these other beings behave, but perhaps you don't understand why. Seem to not understand some of the most basic human problems, but notice the movements, try to make sense of these strange humanoid creatures, but don't ever truly fit in. I'd reflect this in a low charisma, and a general poor speaking style, especially when dealing with non-thri-kreen. Perhaps you will stick to simple commands like, "We move." Perhaps even the idea of individual first-person perspective is alien to you.

If you have, or have access to, Shadowrun, check out "Wolf Totem" shamans and play virtually identical to that.... "Warrior, brother to pack, step infront of females as soon as any potential danger turns up, win every fight but his last one"....

We were playing Dark Sun a while ago and our party had a thri-kreen ranger. IT kept asking the party leader if it could eat my Mul barbarian once I become useless... After that, it bought a turtle. Our cleric who loved cats thought that it was a pet turtle. She was shocked when she found out that it was actually a snack...

Thrki-kreens - always trying to eat party members! :D
