In anticipation of the Sin City movie coming out on Friday, how about a discussion of the alignments of the 3 heroes? (Hartigan, Marv, and Dwight). My personal Feelings are that they come down like this:

Hartigan: Lawful good, and a textbook case, at that. Does what he needs to to keep Nancy safe, giving up everything in the process. Goes outside the system only when there is absolutely, positively NO OTHER CHOICE. Puts others ahead of himself (even if, in the case of his wife, he can't explain the how or why to her), particularly his wife and Nancy.

Marv: Lawful evil. Tries to do what's right by avenging Goldie and taking care of his parole officer, but far too cruel and vicious to qualify as anything nonevil. A bit complex, as he does seem to have a sense of decency to him (which I'd explain with the "lawful" bit)

Dwight: Haven't finished reading "The Big Fat Kill" yet, so I still have to do some evaluating. I'm leaning towards chaotic neutral.

In A Dame to Kill For, which was the prequel to The Big Fat Kill, Dwight starts out as this guy who's trying to keep up a normal life, trying not to lose control of himself and "let the monster out."

It all comes crashing down when Ava, his old girlfriend and evil by her own admission, leads him with lie after lie into murdering her innocent husband so that she can get her hands on all of his money, then tries to kill Dwight afterward. As Ava explains rather viciously once Dwight's crossed the line, "sex made him stupid, ready to believe anything."

Dwight responds by heading to Old Town with Marv and enlisting the girls of that place to help him carry out a mission of vengeance against Ava.

Among Dwight's rather...questionable acts in that graphic novel was using Marv, the violent hero of the first Sin City graphic novel, for his own gain (namely, setting him upon Manute, Ava's big and powerful bodyguard, who also plays a role in The Big Fat Kill), something he hated himself for doing.

I am not sure I would classify Marv as EVIL per se. True, he is a sadist when it comes to torturing people for information but he also looked after Nancy and other women. Definitely a little insane. But I might offer him up as a violent Chaotic Neutral. I think he may have been evil once upon a time but his alignment has shifted from some point in the past until now where he has mellowed the evil in him into a neutral sort of outlook. Mess with me and I'll grind you up into little bits. Leave me alone and I'll leave you alone. (Definitely some Barbarian Rage mixed in there)

that's the problem with the cut and dry DnD system of alignment, you can't classify the complex nature of characters with a simple addition.
