I'm not usually too good at writing backstories (I'm not bad at thinking them up, but writing them down is harder), so I'm quite proud of how this one turned out. Can anyone give me any suggestions on how it might be improved? Background: Like many sorcerers, Siobhan was cast out of her home when her magic began to manifest itself. In her presence fires started, fragile objects shattered and vile creatures would appear from nothing and maim those around her. After one of her inadvertantly summoned creatures slaughtered her family as they slept, she was forced to flee from an equally murderous mob. Trekking crosscountry, she eventually settled down in an abandoned quarry not far from a small village. The quarry had long had a reputation for being haunted, so the occasional burst of light and flame as she struggled with her powers wasn't any particular worry to the villagers. The occasional adventurer came to investigate the lights, but Siobhan managed to either stay out of sight or successfully defeat them. From time to time children would escape from their parents and attempt to explore the quarry despite the warnings of spirits and monsters. Generally they were simply watched, although sometimes Siobhan's infernal impulses would take over and the unfortunate child would meet a grisly fate at the claws and teeth of her fiends. A particularly foolish child was looking over a sharp slope, when the ground beneath him gave way, dropping him down and trapping him beneath a pile of rubble. Siobhan rescued him and brought him to the edge of the village, where he was found and safely returned. The day after, Siobhan found a small amount of bread and milk outside the entrance to the quarry; a thanks from the boy's parents to the 'kind spirit' that returned their son. As the boy had been unconscious, he had no memory of the sorcerer or his rescue. The gift appeased Siobhan's infernal spirit, and she no longer felt compelled to harm those who entered the quarry. She also began to keep a closer eye on the village, helping to keep away threats and sometimes rescue villagers lost or endangered, though she would always keep out of sight, preferring to withhold her aid rather than betray her anonymity. Eventually she left the quarry and the village. She had no real reason to do so, she simply did. Taking the bits and pieces she'd scavenged from the adventurers she'd slain, Siobhan began to wander, unsure of where she was going, if indeed she had a destination. Appearance: Siobhan has olive skin, blue eyes, and dark red hair.. Two lines of paler skin stretch diagonally across her right eye, from her forehead to her cheekbone. Her clothes, taken from a female monk who fell to her howl, consist of a purple hooded robe and black leather clothes underneath. Despite her somewhat savage lifestyle, they are always clean and in good repair, kept so with her magic. Her name is pronounced 'Sha-vorn'. |

As far a length and detail, this backstory is perfect for when you may just be starting a campaign with this character. You've hit pretty much all of the big events in her life, now it's time to go through and start fleshing out the smaller events and people in her life. Maybe you could do some more with her parents (were they nice people?) and the little boy (why did she decide to save him, rather than kill him?). That kind of thing. Anyway, keep up the good work. -Baerdog7 |
