Hi,
I'm working on a character, but I don't really know what to do with him.

Basically it's an Illuskan from Waterdeep (Sword Coast).

Short char. history:

Comes from a monastery that lies in or near Waterdeep. Or maybe it could be a fighting school, like a dojo? He somehow got involved in streetfighting and found that his martial arts he learned where of good use. The streetfighting made him some new friends (or "friends".) This started to reflect more and more on his personality, and the words of one of his new friends, a religious man, started to affect him too. He gradually became less attentive at his lessons, a little more rebelling.
Eventually his superiors found out that he had been involved in activitys that didn't fit the monastarys view, and so he was kicked out/left

Now, this needs some work, but basically what I want is an ex monk who's now a religous man of Tempus(or another god of fighting, maybe. Haven't checked up the gods that much) and has left his monastery.
I want him to try to preach about his god to other people. (ranks in knowledge religion, class skill for the monk, but learned from the religous streetfighter guy)

He's a level 2 monk when the game starts.
I want him to be more of a Brawler than a Kung fu monk, but most of all, this is going to be a fighter class guy. It's not gonna focus on unarmed battles and suchs.

Feedback and ideas on how to improve on this i s welcome.
It feels a little too basic, this thing with the monastery and being thrown out for doing something they didn't like and then go and adventure. Also, I have no Idea on HOW he's going to be taken up in the monastery. I don't want the original abandonded and found when he was a baby.

The "went to a dojo to learn martial arts and such and then got kicked out because the teacher found out he was streetfighting" approach feels better. But... how do I do that? It makes it feel like he's not a monk at all and thus couldn't level in monk (and he has 2 monk levels)

Many families supported religious fighting monastries by giving over a small child - you are not an orphan you were given to the monastary - since this allowed your family to have one less mouth to feed off of their meager earnings as well it allowed you the ( 5th ?Xth? child ) to improve your and the family's standing in life/afterlife. You are not angry nor disappointed in your parents for what they did - it was a good choice for both them and you.

*****

As a suggestion you came from a poor fishing family that is still around - your older brothers have just saved up enough money to buy the family's first boat - small, old and in need of much work - but it is theirs and they are proud of it.

Have one brother be an expert sailor/fisherman the rest of the family can be commaners with similar backgrounds - one of them should be good at carpentry/minor shipwright as well as a few ranks in sailor. One of the wives/sisters could also have low ranks in merchant based skills - that is how they were able to buy the boat and start the family on the road to prosperity.

This way your family and you are not ay odds and you can go visit them as you travel the Sword Coast - it also allows your GM a few hooks.

*****

As a twist have both the streetfigther and the monks support different brother/sister gods - one defensive violent one aggresive violent- so the monks didn't just kick you out - you violated some rules and are still young and learning about yourself and your beliefs - because of that the abbot asked you to leave and discover who you really are and what you really want to beleive in - it still allows you a chance to return to the monastry later - or the GM to use the monastary and your mainly good relationships there as another hook ;)

***

If you like this I could also - try out a few more things but I would need to know more about your character.

oh, I like, I like. =D

When I get the time I think I will take both the second and third ideas and incorporate them in the background.

I'll be back!

Glad you liked the ideas - hope your GM approves of them as well.

A skill list from before you joined the party would be useful in assisting you with the character's background.

Yeah. Well, I haven't really made the char yet. But I'll post here when I have.
Still working on the background and so on.

Even better - you can build the character around his background :)

Might post more later

Since your in FR, you might want to check out the Shou Disciple PrC. It has a nice "beat people up" feel to it, and supports the use of both unarmed attacks and martial weapons. It's the best fighter-monk flavor I know of in FR, and it even has a (rival?) school as an organizational backbone. It's a good way to continue your core monk fighting abilities and theme while remaining an ex-monk, and it doesn't have any of that "mystic power" or "enlightenment" business. ;)
