| Calimport Lurker07-11-05, 09:58 AM | I willl begin soon playing a 2 level Male Rogue Chaotic Good, called Kamal. The background I have in mind is Kamal is a fugitive slave from Calimport, but I have some questions and need your help. :D 1 żDoes slaves wear any mark? I thougt about having a slave mark in the chest, branding iron type... Wich magic I will need to erase this mark? 2 What can use a calishite rogue instead a Short Sword? Something smaller than a Scymitar, but dont know what 3 Will the thieves guild of Calimport use slaves as "workers"? |
| Bullet-proof Monk07-11-05, 11:52 PM | Question 1: Thats entirely up to you. Its is EXTREMELY likely that if you were a slave of quality(either through talents, abilities, or appearance)that your master/owner would have seen fit to mark you as his or hers. Perhaps any of the following : *Brand *Tattoo : perhaps of magical nature. Something that allows for a degree of tracking. A homing/location type device. A homing device would make for great ideas and encounters for your DM. *Magical(marked)shackle, bracer, ankle brace or collar. This item too could be enchanted w/detection or location enchantments. Question 2: A sabre or maybe rapier. Maybe a Jambiya(aka Punch Dagger) for easy concealment. Question 3: Depending on the slaves talents or skills, I would say yes if it prophets the guild in any fashion worth the risk of losing that property. Or perhaps just to do "dirty" work that would distance the guild from the situation in case things go poorly. |
| Need_A_Life07-12-05, 02:15 AM | Well in many cultures slaves were marked, tattooes are the cheapest; much cheaper and longer lasting than chains. Of course it wouldn't be an expensive intricate design but rather a letter or two cut into your skin and ash (or sod) poured into the wound and letting it heal. I would suggest a letter covering your chest or on your forehead (easy to see and all). Remember to have scars on your back from the slavemasters hands. A punching dagger would be nice, as would a scythe (if you don't have proficiency that is; you got it when you worked in the fields  ) but that might be a bit too large. I'd say that a theives guild (I am assuming that they're an underground organization and doesn't have a sign saying "Theives Guild" on their front door) would hire them as informants, placing them on various key-locations dressed as beggars (blind and one-legged are easy to pull off without actually needing that disability) who regulary reports to some people who in turn delivers it to the head of the guild. They'd be paid only a few copper every day but would be allowed to keep anything they begged. |
| braindead34507-12-05, 04:43 AM | The guild would definitely hire slaves that show talent. Consider who normally own slaves-the wealthy and powerful. A rogue marked as a slave will have little difficulty entering such households. You just need to go through the process of being sold to the right people or you could bluff your way in as a new aquisition. Escaping into the slave quarters when being chased by the city guard will be no problem. Especially if you look the part and stay away from the house slaves (those that would likely rat you out rather than encurring the wrath of their owner). The drawback is that each slave owner might have a unique way of marking his slaves. A comon identifier to denote slave status and a separate mark for the household. Think in terms of cattle brands. A good disguise will work wonders. |
| Claggart07-12-05, 09:28 AM | I don't have my FR book with me, so my spelling/details may not be exact. Anyway, there is a country far to the east on the map in FRCS called Mulhondra(?). The society is very church-centric, where clerics are the most powerful and influential people around. The overall society is not "evil" but slavery is still legal. All slaves are the property of churches and harming one is considered a crime against the church. The churches loan/rent the slaves for various purposes. Because of this arrangement, slaves are treated well and are much more likely to be educated and trained. Its a good change from the typical slave background. Claggart |
| The Lost07-18-05, 11:04 PM | As far as a lighter exotic weapon goes, I like the Quickblade Rapier detailed within The Complete Adventurer. The illustration of the Quickblade is great. |
| Gurel07-21-05, 02:59 AM | Well, my ex-slave character still wear his manacles with short chains hanging from them. Not very subtle if your an escaped slave in a socety where slaves are allowed I guess. Later had them enchanted as bracers and they are now an integrated part of my armour. Yeah, hes kinda weird. |
| Abyssal Stalker07-21-05, 03:37 AM | You might also have several markings, if the mark represents the owner. Slaves are sold like cattle and everybody wishes to have his own mark on the slave. In Dark Sun slaves usually have several tattoos to describe their ownership. I guess they just draw a cross over the previous owners mark...:) Don't know which the case is in Calimport, but with your GMs approval, just make up your own marking system! |
| nephtis07-22-05, 03:43 AM | Some markings are reasonable. If you don't want it to be something extreme and easy to get rid of you could try a shaved head (depending on the culture. In Thay this won't work for a slave, but it might in Calisham, I don't know). The hair will grow back as he gets used to his freedom. As for the weapon.. if you have e feat to spent on an exotic weapon, a Kukri might be nice. |
