I was reading the Unpopular PrC/Class Handbook on the CharOp boards and I came a cross someone trying to optimize a dirgesinger. I never really looked at the class before, and so I decided to go check out libris mortis for it. I read it and I liked the flavor of the class and it reminded me of a watered down Seeker of the Song... And so I got to thinking. After I doublechecked the entry requirements and blahit is possible to make a Bard 5/ Dirgesinger 5/ Seeker of the Song 10. A bard who casts at 5th level + full 20 music. It isn't that great optimization wise, but I found it very flavorful and so I thought, why don't I create a story for this bard who learned sorrow, and then found enlightment through the primal music. At least that's the basics.

Unnamed the Unnamed was a student of the Mentor Without a Name. (Don't you love my creativeness when I am tired?) Unnamed learned music and whatnots from Mentor and saw him as a father figure because of Insert tragic instant where parents died. As he grew, Unnamed and Mentor traveled telling stories and singing songs. But in a Insert incident where Mentor dies, Mentor died. Unnamed was so upset by losing the only one he called family. He tried to go on the path Mentor would have wanted him to follow and tried to continue his career as a normal bard, but overcome by grief he became fascinated with lamentable stories. His songs no longer brought joy and lifted the burdens of those who listened. As he sang, his melancholy voice would bring tears to those who stopped to listen. He became fascinated with the power his music had now... Insert talk about training as a Dirgesinger. As he would lament over his tragic life and tell woeful stories of the sadness of others, he encountered another story teller. His words held a strange power as well. But it did not bring sadness or joy... It was a strange feeling for him. He could tell there was great magic in the voice of this performer. He needed to learn more of this power. That was his first exposure to the primal music. Insert scenario of befriending the other bard, now named Friend. Friend and Unnamed traveled together and Friend taught Unnamed the primal music. He had now found a new path. He would use the primal music and fuse it with his deeprooted pain. He would Insert Purpose here.

Yeah... couldn't think at all... that was the best I could come up with... normally I'm good at writing backstories oh well... Whatcha think of the basic outline?

I like the story and can't wait to see what you come up with for the inserts. The one thing I would do a little differently is to make the Mentor who shall not be named by me a seeker of the song. He died in the aforementioned insert before teaching his pupil the last note in the primal music. The note of balance. Without that final piece to the primal puzzle the death of the mentor spun Unamed into a Powerful Woe.

Until one day in the deepest resounding hollow lonliness of the dirge he heard a counter song a note of purest Harmony. The note that the mentor did not have time to teach him. This note was the answer to the question that Unnamed had yet to ask. There are notes Joy and there are notes Sorrow, and THIS was the note that they chased each other around, the center. Or some such.

I would never have him meet the utterer of that note. She would always be around. He would hear her voice in the river, he would hear her song in the wood. One does not train to be a Seeker, he need only seek.

Anyway just my two coppers.

Because I like reading the CharOp boards for interesting character ideas. And so I saw the unpopular PrC/Class one and thought.. hmm let me read this. Most of them I had never heard of but that is because I am relatively knew to D&D but the Dirgesinger caught my attention and Unnamed was born.

Daxen:
Thank you for your ideas. I like the idea of Mentor without a name being a Seeker of the Song and not actually meeting the other seeker. Thank you for your ideas. I believe Unnamed's past might actually become better.

Sadly I haven't been able to think of anything to properly insert. But I do believe I thought of a first name for him. Cedric. I don't know why, but I like the name Cedric.

Here is part of the flavor I always felt Cedric had. Cedric at an early age (5-ish) had lived a carefree life when a... hmm... I like the idea of a band of trolls attacked his village... Let's just make it 2. They slaughtered his parents in front of him and he was soon to be a victim when the minstrel who had been traveling through the town appeared to save him. The musician started to sing and Cedric was able to sense the power in the minstrel's voice. The two trolls that had killed his parents stared awestruck. While in their fascinated stupor, another melody seemed to come and harmonized with the minstrel's voice. Flame shot forth and spread over the trolls. Shaken from this, they attempted to attack, but more flame was only there to greet them. The singer had made sure that there was nothing left of the invaders. The boy shocked, amazed, and awed by such a display of power ran up towards the minstrel and cried. The traveler decided at that moment to take Cedric under his wing and teach him the joys music could bring.

Alright. Now to create more of his. Once I get more comments/criticisms on this part I'll edit the first post.

How can you get into Dirgesinger with Bard 5? Dirgesinger requires Requiem, which requires 8 ranks in Perform, which you can't get until level 5, and after that, your next feat isn't until level 6. Unless there's been errata, I'm pretty sure the example character is impossible.

It was just an example character, I hadn't worried about if it worked or not yet. So if maybe just bard 6/dirge 4/ Seeker 10... the build doesn't really matter it's what each part of it represents. I mean come on. It's a bard who can only sing. He only casts as 6th level bard so he is primarily a buffer/debuffer. Optimization/ being correct with the build isn't my concern here.

I like it!

I was thinking about the death of his mentor, and came up whit a somewhat odd idea: the vengeance motif, revisited! A relative of the trolls he killed returns to destroy him, and Cedric does once again see a loved one slain by a troll. And, since the troll explained why he killed the mentor, Cedric feels that the mentors death is his fault. After all, he got killed only because he saved Cedrics life that day. This adds an extra layer to Cedrics sadness.

I don't really know if it's any good, but it might help you come up whit something...
