| Caretaker12-05-05, 08:26 PM | OK, In about two weeks one of the players of the group I'm DMing is gonna try to be DM for a change, and for a few sessions I get to play again. I'm going to play a Male Human Wizard (level 7) called Nelson Magusson and I could use some help/suggestions/ideas for roleplaying him. Nelson's basic story is that he was born the child of the court mage of the local kingdom. This Mage is the advisor to the King (Think Merlin-King Arthur or Vangerdahast-King Azoun in FR) and as such one of the most powerful wizards around. Nelson was apprenticed by his father and quickly learned the ways of magic. However, as Nelson gained in power, he also gained the attention of one of his father's rivals. This rival mage cast a charm spell on Nelson, which he utterly failed to resist, and used Nelson to gain information about his father's secret research, even prying some state secret from Nelson's lips. After his father realised his son had been under the control of one of his enemies, he quickly dispelled the charm, but he also disowned his son, saying that "he was ashamed one of his blood was charmed so easily" In reaction, Nelson renounced his father, taking up the new name Magusson and left town. He now lives in a town on the border of the Kingdom, where he owns a shop that provides arcane services such as identifying magical items, crafting magical items on commission, and occassionaly he uses the two homunculi (or whatever the plural is) he crafted as messengers for the local authroties. The other Party members have already met him in his function as a shopkeeper, and he will be found wandering the magical forest where the adventure will start, looking for a magical ingredient or something like that. Since the moment his father cast him out, Nelson has been striving to become a better mage so as to prove himself to his father, and also he is somewhat panicky when it comes to charm spells, seeking ways to make himself more resistant to it. He is also a bit shy around others, trusting only in his magical constructs and in his familiar. Now what I need your help on is in how to effectively roleplay the guy. His character is quite mellow in my mind, so what kind of mannerisms or quirk could I give him to fleshen him out, so to speak? The challenge for me is taking a pretty much standard build and background and making a character out of it that is still real and fresh. I would like to hear your ideas about what he would behave like. If you guys have any more questions, please ask em and I'll try to answer them. My thanks in advance! |
