| Spirit_Golem05-04-04, 06:14 PM | Maybe you guys can help me with a new character I am creating. Like the title says, I am thinking about using a sorcerer that is also a bounty hunter named Marcus Rythor. The campaign will be a swashbuckling type game set around the Sea of Stars in Forgotten Reams. Also, I do not know much about the Forgotten Realms world, so any information would be nice. Early History Marcus's father was either the mayor, captian of the watch, or some other important person in Marcus's village. Marcus's father protected him from the other villagers when his sorcerous abilities became apparent. There was a huge fire in the village, and Marcus's father and many others died. Even though Marcus did not cause the fire, he was blamed for it, and was run out of his village. Recent History Marcus made his way from town to town, trying to survive, and eventually made his way to a city near the Sea of Stars. A short while after Marcus entered the city, a thief tried to mug him. Marcus did not take to this kindly, and promptly cast a few spells and knocked the theif unconscious. Marcus took the half-dead theif to the closest guard station, and presented him to the first guard he saw. Fortunately, this was the Captian of the guard. The Captian told Marcus that the theif that he had brought in was a somewhat high ranking criminal. also the theif had just escaped during a raid by the city guard. Marcus did not care about what the Captian was saying until he told Marcus that he was entitled to a reward. Marcus was dumbfounded, he had never heard of such a thing. Marcus took the reward and left, thinking to himself, "This is a good way to make money". Notes: 1. I am thinking about giving the Fire Bloodline Feat from Dragon #311, since my DM has allowed it, but don't know how to incorporate it. 2. I think that I should put some points into Gather Information and Diplomacy, to show that he actually does track criminals down. So, what do you think? EDIT: Imported this from notepad, and it looked weird, so I fixed it up. |
| Surgo05-04-04, 07:25 PM | The problem I see is that a high-ranking criminal should have been able to ice Marcus with one hit (read: sneak attack) |
| Lugburz05-05-04, 11:25 AM | Surgo is very right(altohu it wouldnt be much sneak in the atack it would be wery thraightfoward into his heart;) ) you shoud definitly put some some pints in diplomacy and gather info. |
| Aluroon05-05-04, 04:40 PM | First, what level are you starting at. Second, You really should get the FR campain setting Book. Third, This question probubly should be in the FR forms but thats ok. Hum, some very seruis gaps considering its set in FR. The odds of being run out of a town because of being a sorcerer are not very good in FR. It would help to know who what you have in your group, classes/races/levels of the other characters, purely so I can have an idea of where he would fit in. You might want to talk to your dm about changing up the sorcerers skills/abillitys because as it stands (and this is the openion of many many people) it is rather weak and unrealisic, especially for a cha based character. What are your abillity scores, str, cha, int, ect... if you could post these I might have some more ideas as to how he would act. As said earlier about the high ranking theif there is very very little chance a low level character, proticually a d4 character would survive his opening sneak attack, but thats only from a game mechanics point of view. Its a nice plot hook for your dm though, considering when he gets out of jail he'll be non to happy with your character. The idea of not knowing about the idea of bountys on people is rather unrealisic (unless you have a low intetegence. Even more so if he was the son of a high ranking person in a town. In many parts of the world, histoically people would be burned themselfs for being arsonests, however thats you thing not mine. I would suggest taking the nonlethal substatution feat (was that in the BoED?) if you want to take people alive. The feat lets you do subsidle damage if you wish, a good thing if you want to take people alive as a spellcaster. All in all this concept has some very serius problums in terms of mechanaics and storyline, however if you were to address these it would be a very intersting character to play. If you want any other imput from me you can message this acount using the built in messaging. Good luck Aluroon |
| Spirit_Golem05-05-04, 05:25 PM | I have reviewed some of the FRCS and the PGtF, and have a few ideas. After thinking about it, I think that you are right, Aluroon. So, how about this; instead of being run out of his town, maybe my character should be from the city of Tilverton in Cormyr. Perhaps he should be one of the few that were away from their home when the problem started. And so, Marcus is adventuring to find out what happened to Tilverton. A dramatic change I know, but after looking through the FRCS, this is the best thing I could come up with. Also, the ability scores that I rolled are rather high, and I would like to run them past the DM. My tentitive ability scores are: Str 11 Dex 14 Con 16 Int 14 Wis 14 Cha 17 EDIT: If a Moderator wants to change the fourm that this is in, please do so. |
| Sisyfos05-05-04, 05:43 PM | If you want an optimized bounty hunter sorcerer then just go to the sister forum: Wizards.COMmunity Boards > d20 System Games > d20 Related Topics > Character Optimization with your concept. I think its totally possible (and not even particularly hard ) to build a good bounty hunter sorcerer. Just hone your character concept in this forum and the build for that will come later on. | Aluroon05-05-04, 05:53 PM | Hum, I'm going to work now from memery so stay with me. Tilverton was the city that mysteryuslly had almost everyone dissapear into the plain of shadow right? Well Heres an idea. Maybe he knows what happened but is unable to fix it right now because of his current power. Maybe he has asked other powerful mages for help but the truth is to outlandish to be beleived so they ignored him. He despretly wants to help save his family. um yeh sorry about that, I just got off on a tangent there. It doesnt really work with the bounty hunter idea. (Stupid brain get on task :banghead: ) I like the change because it really helps with many of the problums that the origanal idea had. Sorry if my post was alittle harsh. I have to say that your abillity scores are more then alittle high and you really should talk to your dm before basing everything off of them. I want to agian ask what level you are. Help more later Aluroon |
| Spirit_Golem05-05-04, 06:17 PM | Sorry for forgetting about the level. Unfortuantely, I will not be able to attend the first three to four of sessions. The DM said that in the begining we would gain level once every one or two sessions, I'd assume level 3 or 4. |
| Aluroon05-05-04, 06:35 PM | It's a real hit to miss the first few session, mostly because at those levels you tend to develope alot of contacts in whatever community your in, but you cant really help that. :censored:  :tantrum:  :headexplo :weep: :( There is a big difference between level 3 and level 4 for a sorcerer, due to level 2 spells. Hum. I really cant add anything else right now as I dont have my books with me. I'll probubly have more to say withen the week though. Hope I helped some. Aluroon |
| Grislof the Blind05-05-04, 06:56 PM | I have a very similar concept.. Kaldias Alderahn is a half elf fighter/wizard who lived in Tilverton. He learned the magic arts from his "father in law" and was a rookie on the city guard, where he learned to use a sword effectively. One day when out of town on a mission, he took somedays to come back, when he returned the purple dragons had isolated the town and negated himn entrance. Talking to an older man in robes that was comanding the purple dragons(a war wizard of cormyr), he learned the little that was known about what happened to the town, and, because he has showed some knowledge of magic and had nowhere else to go, the warwizard took him as an apprentice and helping hand. After years of loyal duty,he and his "master"agreed that he would be bether leaving and searching the world for ways to undo what happened to Tilverton. He was sent on a mission to find out everything he could about a pyromaniac that was attacking a nearby town. He sent all the info he could get , and was then dismissed of service by the warwizard. As the pyro had attacked the home of some influential nobles in town, these nobles offered a big reward to anyone who could find the man. He and a group of adventurer's presented themselves to seek the criminal and then joined forces to try and track the pyro and get the reward. Since then he wanders all cormyr searching for magic knowledge to save his hometown , and works as a bounty hunter to earn a living. |
| Spirit_Golem05-05-04, 07:34 PM | Actually Aluroon, your idea is better than my original. Do you mind if I use it as a general basis for my character? |
| Aluroon05-05-04, 07:43 PM | Np, I live to serve. Aluroon |
| Spirit_Golem05-05-04, 11:36 PM | I have come up with something, using your ideas as framework. It's quite long so don't fall asleep. Marcus was one of the few people who survived the Tilverton incident. He escaped while the Plane of Shadow was absorbing the city. Strangely, he instinctively knew what exactly was happening, and tried to get his family to escape with him. Unfortunately his family thought that he was delusional, and did not believe him. As Marcus ran out of the city while it was being swallowed up, he felt something guiding him on the safest and fastest path. This was the first time his powers manifested. After Marcus had escaped the city, he tried to get help from people he met. Although he left an impression on people, no one would believe him. He was depressed. Marcus then went back to Tilverton, hoping with all his heart, that someone had gotten help. When he arrived, there were wizards studying the area. Help had finally arrived, or so he thought. When he talked to the wizards, they thought that he was mad. After all, how could the Plane of Shadow spill into the Material Plane? That Marcus did not know. In Marcus’s mind there was only one course of action. Find out how this happened, and how to reverse it. He then remembered the stories of famous adventurers that his parents had told him as a child. His inspired him, so he thought of adventuring as a means to his ends. In the time that he was trying to get help his powers had become fully apparent. Because of this, he knew that he had to study magic in his own way to help his family, friends, and other citizens of Tilverton. |
| Aluroon05-06-04, 03:08 PM | Sounds good. You have quite an adaptive imaganation. I hope you enjoy Marcus saga. And I look forward to hearing more as to what becomes of him in the future. Until then. Aluroon |
| Spirit_Golem05-07-04, 12:05 AM | I have looked over the PHtF and have read what actually happened to Tilverton, and have changed my character's backstory appropretly. This is probably my final product, unless something that is in my background is wrong. Marcus was one of the few people who survived the Tilverton incident. He escaped while the invading Shade warriors were killing the local militia. Strangely, he instinctively knew something was going to happen. As Marcus ran out of the city, he felt something guiding him on the safest and fastest path. This was the first time his powers manifested. Therefore, Marcus was safely out of the city when Vangerdahast used his magic. What could cause such destruction? This Marcus did not know. In Marcus’s mind there was only one course of action. Find out how this happened, and how defeat the Shadovar. He then remembered the stories of famous adventurers that his parents had told him as a child. His inspired him, so he thought of adventuring as a means to his ends. In the time that he was trying to get help his powers had become fully apparent. Because of this, he knew that he had to study magic in his own way to avenge his family, friends, and other citizens of Tilverton. |
