I've been playing D&D for about 8 months now and I've built a few diff. kinds of characters but I've never built a spell caster. My G.F. would like to play with us now and she wants to be a spell caster of some sort. I was wondering if anyone has any good ides for a character. My DM allowed us to put a -1 L.A. on all races so a +1 LA is now a 0. Everything else is pretty normal. But were not running eberron so im pretty limited there. Also, were starting her at about I've 5. But I needed a path to follow longer if she decides she likes it. Any help would be great. Thanks

Perhaps would you be better to post it on the What's a Player to do board? Anyway, here's some suggestions:

Forrest Gnome Druid: Can speack with animal at will, so he can talk to the animals she summons with Summon Nature Ally. The bonus to hide help to go unnoticed.

Sun Elf Wizard: Their favored class. The +2 to intelligence really help them.

Tiefling Wizard: Same than above, and thanks to your DM's house rule, many goodies for no LA.

Aasimar Cleric: +2 to WIS help the spellcasting, +2 to CHA help undeads turning, and as above, many goodies for no LA.

Sorcerer: One of the easiest class to play (but not to build). She has few spell available, so the choice should be easy. Simply help your GF picking up the good spells...

I agree with the sorcerer. You and the DM (if that isn't you) should help her with the spells, but that almost goes without saying for someone's first character anyway. I'd suggest a simple race, too.
