Okay, quick and dirty version of the campaign setting I'm going to be participating in soon (most of it blatantly stolen from I Am Legend):

The world is currently in a dark age. There used to be a big, thriving empire, but then the "Others" came about. Nobody really knows what the Others are, but nobody who sees one lives to tell about it. Humanity is the only civilized race of concern, and they spend all their time huddling in their independent city-states because the Others roam all over the place. The only creatures that can't be gripped by the influence of Others are constructs and undead, so as a result the undead have been (marginally) accepted into society.

Now, here's the skinny on my character. I haven't had the chance to run it by the DMs yet, but they're pretty flexible about things, so I expect the bulk of things to go through smoothly:

There exists an academy, training elite fighting troops specialized in fighting and terminating the Others. The schooling is rigorous and unforgiving, so only the sharpest minds and the unbreakable spirits can make it through to become a graduate. Belmoore was not one of those sharpest minds. The studies for becoming a wizard proved too difficult for him to bear. Over time, he began hearing voices in his head, and soon after the same voices began to haunt his dream. Before long, Belmoore was found in his bed, foaming at the mouth and babbling to himself in an incomprehensible language. Without a pat on the back, the academy gave him a boot to the ass and dumped him on the street. A vagrant on the street, Belmoore wanders among the streets, mumbling pseudowords to himself day to night. What nobody else knows, however, is that the voices in Belmoore's head are hardly imaginary. Not only do they actually talk to him, but they tell him how to fight the Others. Now only if he could find a way to apply it....

A bit rudimentary at this point, but cut me some slack as I just cooked this up earlier today. The real question at this point is that I've taken the feat Spell Thematics (from Player's Guide to Faerun), and I'm trying to figure out an appropriate theme. On paper, Belmoore is a third level wizard specializing in conjuration (barred evocation and necromancy). I eventually plan on taking the Alienist PrC, so that's why I integrated the whole voices-in-the-head bit into the story. I also took the Improved Familiar feat, and I'm hoping I can convince the DMs to get a hyena as a familiar, and then flavor it so that the familiar is a physical manifestation of his descent into insanity. Since the idea behind the character is slowly going insane because of continual contact with pseudonatural beings, I can't quite figure out how to flavor my spells.

A friend suggested that summoning spells would open up a portal for the creature and crazy howling sounds would come out. I think it's on the right track, but I have trouble figuring out how to connect that to other spells at the moment.

Oh, and I guess suggestions and comments on the character itself are welcome if you really want to.

Maybe just for a second(maybe less) whenever you cast a spell a really chillig howl is heard, someting that no know creature can make. Your eyes became back pools, portals to a place that no human should experience, just for a second though...

someting like that?

If you have acces to Lords of Madness, you may like some of the feats there... If i remember correctly there are some aberration feats the make you more and more aberrant with each one you take...
