Do not, i repeat DO NOT try to use a spiked chain without at least being proficient with it! I lost one of my favourite characters due to that mistake. I won't even get near a spiked chain anymore. Be it real, or RPG created.

One background idea I had was for a half-giant or goliath sailor-type. He used the ship's anchor chain in battle and boarding actions...

I had a wild elf that was a slave in thay. In his escape the only weapon that he could use was the chain that was attatched to his wrist.

I took some mega negatives... but i got out :P

However you want? By RAW, the way to make a character with a spiked chain is to take the EWP feat for it and get your hands on one (buy, steal, craft, or find one: your DM may have banned them).

If you want some background help, then we're going to need to know more about your character.

Edit: and the campaign setting.

QFT.

Keep in mind an exoic weapon by definition is a rare and difficult to use weapon that takes specialized trainign and practice. This, of course, is a small thign adn im certain you've considered it before. Just udnerstand that jsut by ahving it you're already unique and different then the vast majority of thsoe around you.

You can find the Kyton (aka Chain Devil) here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/devil.htm). Just scroll down.

What area of the forgotten realms are ya gonna be from? I think the easiest place you could learn that is Thay due to their gladiatorial traditions etc. Another option is to create a sect of warriors that specialize in the use of the spiked chain. If I recall correctly there was a mini called the Snakestrike Duelist which used a spiked chain. I believe they were the elven faction. You can find some info here (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/iw/iw20011216a) about them. Maybe you can use that for some inspiration if you have to create your own faction which uses the spiked chain.

BTW I think an elven spiked chain wielder would be awesome fun! Especially if you combined that with a swashbuckler/rogue. Just make sure to pick up combat expertise, improved trip and combat reflexes! Then sit back and let the fun begin.:)

Hope that helps some!

Cheers

spiked chain is cool cause i have a pirate that uses one and if you trip useing it you can drop it to avoid damage and it can attack with in 10ft or an adjecnt enemy unlike whips and stuff

Whips can attack adjacent foes, that just provokes and AoO (which is really lame, but whatever).

One twist that might be interesting would be making an extremely lawful character who sees the chain as an allegory for discipline: to the untrained it does nothing but bind and restrict, but for those who master it, it becomes a powerful tool and weapon.

That would make for a great paladin. Good idea for the symbolism there. Earlier I heard something about an elve slave using a chain to spring himself. That could also go the other way, using the chain as a gate-way to his freedom and a weapon that represents his ability to use the oppresor's bonds against him. Woot! this is fun, thank you all for speaking with me about my favorite pass-time.:) :) :D :D ;) :heehee :invasion:

Whips are great for Beguilers, because they threaten, and allow the use of the special abilities of the class. Spiked chains are often the most abused feats and combat around. Don't take the skills and chain unless you know how to role-play it and actually know about tripping, AoO, threaten ranges, etc. Else, everyone near yo will end up face down, and maybe yourself. This is my humble suggestion- chain fighting is pretty hard to do well.
