| Feallmharaigh08-29-03, 07:32 PM | Ok, I'm about to play a Human Sorceress, not sure of exact alignment but definitely not evil but not zealously good either. Well, my DM asked if I could make her the spoiled princess type and that my father's kingdom just got sacked and I just escaped with my life. Now, I have no problem playing that character type, I was just curious if someone could help me out by adding some complexity to this nearly skeletal build. |
| Edymnion08-29-03, 09:19 PM | Well, two big hooks for the personality both come from being a spoiled princess. As a spoiled princess, she would have been waited on hand and foot for every little thing should could possibly want. Have her expect all the other PCs to be her servants. If she says she's thirsty, she should expect somebody to bring her something to drink in a clean silver chalice, not have to haul a bucket of water out of a well. On the flip side of this, she will expect people to ONLY do what she says, and always wait for and defer to her judgement. She's not going to take kindly to not being listened to, and will take offense that those ill-mannered orcs aren't waiting for her to finish preening before they come barging in without her permission. Another thing a spoiled princess would be used to is ALWAY being clean, scented bathes, and the softest silks. She is NOT going to be someone who even thinks about getting dirty, much less wearing "peasant clothes" made from such low grade material as wool. She won't walk in the mud, she won't touch anything remotely dirty or slimey, and will make a huge deal over getting a stain in her clothes. She could use Prestidigitation to clean her clothes, but doing anything herself is beneath her, she'll demand that one of the other PCs clean the spot out, and make sure to put in a comment like "But be very careful, thats fine silk, I wouldn't want it to get wrinkled." She'll totally freak out if there's a hole in anything she owns. Of course, neither of those is very compatible with dungeon crawling, so she's not going to be a happy camper. Lots of sulking going on. Not to mention the temper tantrums. BIG temper tantrums when she doesn't get her way. Of course, those temper tantrums are when she's most likely to lash out with her sorceress powers. ;) |
| cheshire_grin08-29-03, 11:35 PM | If you've read the Belgariad series by David Eddings, think Ce'Nedra when she first runs away with the group. If you haven't, you might pick them up -- they're decent books anyway (if you like fantasy). |
| Edymnion08-29-03, 11:58 PM | Lol, or go rent Space Balls. Actually, you should rent Space Balls anyway, hilarious movie. But, to use the characters Space Balls was based off of, think about Princess Leia at the very start of Star Wars. Han was a scruffy looking scoundrel, Luke was a farmboy with hay in his hair, and R2D2 was a means to an end. Only later did she toughen up into a full fledged freedom fighter. |
| Morka08-31-03, 10:47 AM | Don't forget the familiar: a snow-white persan cat, afraid by every squirrel he see! When she thinks she's alone, she should cry about her family being killed, or something like that. If her father was a good king, everytime she has a good idea, she should say: "My father should have done that this way." |
| Trydan08-31-03, 12:01 PM | Another aspect that might be explored is that of being able to (or at least believing as much), that she can solve everything by buying a replacement. The fighter's sword breaks... "oh, daddy (i.e. the king) will buy you a new one". A peasant dies... "stop mourning you others! I will buy you a slave, if you are worried about the lost of workers". etc. |

Princess Vespa it the ultimate in the Spoiled princess type. The other option is to pick up Snow White and look at the queen, or better yet, get Ever After. The older Stepsister in that one is the perfect spoiled princess. Everything is beneath her notice, unless it is a person who is of a higher noble family than herself. Anything that is "beneath" her that forces her to notice it is a threat, and must be either used, subdued or destroyed. |
| Lord of the Ninth09-02-03, 10:32 PM | What I might do with this, is handle it in much the same way that Mrs. Coulter acts in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials, sure you order everyone around and consider most people to be beneath you. However, you are so charismatic that people really do what you tell them. EX: I had a character who was like this recently, he was very focused on Intimidate (only skill he maxed out, took skill focus, and he had a prestige class that ganted him a +1 bonus per level). So when we were locked away in prison (a misunderstanding really, all because the son of an important noble tried to assassinate us and we killed him), but my character is ordering the all the gurads around, and with I think an intimidate check of 45 (or there abouts), I managed to get the guard to get me some of the same food the nobility was eating, not to mention some furniture, and to allow me a visitor. I even managed to hold onto my greatsword (none of them knew that, they just thought it was a bag with my personal effects, no one suspected it for an extra-dimensional space). So anyway, if your very charismatic (and as a sorc will probably will be), you might just be able to boss people around quite easily. Especially if you occasionally use Enchantments, or you use very impressive magic in their presence (a surprising number of people will do your bidding if they think you might turn them into a toad). Of course you can always go the spoilled brat route (and you should to a lesser or greater extent). But other players will take you much more seriously if you can back it up (actually quite a few character in His Dark Material act this way). |
| Ranthanas09-03-03, 07:36 PM | To be honest, I'd say that a sorcerous princess probably plays as a Bard rather than a Sorceror- that skill list is going to be pretty relevant for the sort of things princesses need to do, and she is going to need to be both forceful and likable (diplomacy skill) and good at getting her way (bluff skill) in order to really be effectively played. Otherwise, look at the early entrances of Ce Nedra, complain constantly (although less as the situation gets worse), consider yourself entitled to everything and be a general nuisance with more than enough skills to make up for this. |
| Skyrocket09-04-03, 12:29 AM | One thing I`d suggest is have her be very good at something like dancing, signing or if she`s a magic user crafting items. It gives her a bit more of a justification in having that sort of ego. |
| Lord Lothar09-04-03, 11:37 PM | don't use a bard, it would be the closest, but i would start with a lvl in either aristocrat, or in wizard. or possibly she learned from the priests and is a cleric of a goddess of beauty....(dont know if there is one though, lol) |
| Ranthanas09-05-03, 09:51 AM | Originally posted by Lord Lothar don't use a bard, it would be the closest, Then why not? It has everything you need- some sorcery, stunning social abilities (to get your way), the Perform skill (to give her something to be proud of- I doubt craft would do as good a job), Knowledge (nobility and royalty) and use of the dagger and rapier (the sorts of weapon a princess would be taught). Bardic Lore and Music wouldn't go against concept (although might go against some individual descriptions), with the music being particularly useful for any would-be leader. but i would start with a lvl in either aristocrat, or in wizard. or possibly she learned from the priests and is a cleric of a goddess of beauty....(dont know if there is one though, lol) She's supposed to be a sorceress. Aristo is possible, but any NPC class does a good job of nerfing a character, and from what I can see the priest and wizard would both be more against concept than a bard would be. (As for Wiz/Sorc multiclass, Ugh!) |
