| Friar Tuck07-29-03, 05:44 PM | What do you start with? The race or the class? I almostly think of an backgroundfirst? I have just started to play D&D. If you think i'm stupid, you have right!!!!!!! |
| Fiantha07-29-03, 06:39 PM | No, you are not stupid. I think that what you start with is really a matter of personal preference. I usually start with a concept, like a vain, spoiled princess cast out into the real world, and then choose a race and class to match my concept. My brother often starts with a class he likes, for some neat ability or such, then thinks up a background and personality for his character. He decides race last, to match what he's already chosen. It's really up to you. If you want to think of a background first, then do that because your instincts will probably guide you to how you work best. Best wishes, and hope your new hobby brings many hours of enjoyment. --Fiantha |
| Friar Tuck07-29-03, 06:49 PM | My DM think i am stupid. I almostly take the background first!!! Then the race and the class!!!!!!!!It's much easyer.:) |
| Frodo Lives07-29-03, 11:12 PM | Strangly enough I start with the Stats first! We usually roll for out stats (4d6 drop lowest) with a class in mind for good roles and one for bad roles, and depending what shapes up then I decide if I want to play and elf or dwarf or human etc... For example, if I want to play a rogue I'll roll the stats and if they are good enough to put a decent number in dex, int, and con I might consider an elf, if I don't have enough good stats 14+, then I might take a human because I don't want to take a big con hit and I want the extra skill points because of a lower int. Most times I have a concept and use the stats to tweek it a bit. It might sound like min/maxing but hey I need to have a character thats maxed out a little because we've got a tough DM and I hate it when my characters die:angel: |
| Edymnion07-29-03, 11:47 PM | I usually pick class first, then race, concept, then stats. Say a rogue, then human, then I want a dual shortsword weilding bounty hunter sneak attack melee rogue, so I put high stats in Dex and Str. But the order you make your characters in isn't important. Everybody makes them a differant way, and there is no right or wrong way to do it. |
| Campeador07-30-03, 07:30 AM | I never need to think about race, since I always play human anyways...:D:D But I start with a concept as well, and then figure out how to get there. Which classto start with, and then which abilitie scores to put where. Also I tend to plan ahead. PrC's if they appeal to me, feats, skills to maximise, etc. |
| Trydan07-30-03, 01:38 PM | My order of choice is: concept, class, race, key items of equipment, feats, stats, skills, spells (if any), background, other details. I do make a distinction between concept (general character idea) and background (history as to how the character became like he or she is). Of course it depends on whether you are playing a dungeon crawl, high adventure, detailed plot, hack-n-slash. If your preference is background first, and your DM thinks poorly of that, then chances are he or she is more the hack-n-slash type. |
