| Focused12-01-06, 06:28 PM | We are starting a new game and need help with a backstory. I am going to be a Elf Monk and my wife will be playing a half elf ranger with some rouge levels. Has anyone ever played mix of two elf races, and are there any advantages/disadvantages to this. Also we were informed by are DM that are characters will come into the game knowing each other. We need some help with ideas for why we would be together, and why I would leave my monistary to travel with her. We have thought of a type of love affair that is unwelcomed in the monistary. But that seems a bit vanilla. Any ideas? Also what are your preferences on an elf monk as apposed to a half orc monk? Thanks for all the help in advance. |

You mean your wife brought this up and you'll be stuck with it if you don't find anything else, right? ;) Why don't you tell us more about your campaign? That would help. If you could tie in your elf monk's departure from the monastery with the major storyline (or at least with some happenings) of your DM's game world, that would be a plus. Right now, there are so many reasons why a character would leave his home to adventure. Pick one. -Monastery was burned to the ground or otherwise destroyed. -Was kicked off for lack of discipline. -Left because of issues with powerful senior at the monastery. -Incurred the wrath of *something* and wishes to protect the other monks. -Was shamed, or his family was and he wants to make it right. -Learned of his father's demise - seeks to investigate. -Was whisked away by magic of unknow origin - doesn't know where or when he is anymore. -Was escorting someone or something from a visiting monastery on the boat trip between his own monastery and another place - the ship sunk under perticular circumstances, he was washed ashore but not the someone/something, so his own monastery feels the burden to uncover the truth. -Was polymorphed into a rat for a while by a mysterious enemy, wandered off the monastery ground, and was transformed back by a good samaritan (or was it really a man of good intent?). Current location: unknow. Think about the kind of character you want to play, and the kind of adventure you like. Write a backstory of the appropriate genre (murder mystery, high adventure, etc.) and see if the DM picks up on it to weave an adventure of his own. Your wife's character could tie into almost any of the aforementioned backstory ideas as a friend, rival, lover, sister, mother or beholder matron. Well, okay, maybe not the later. Also, see sig. |

It is time for this monk's training to be put to good use. However, the eldest monk is wise and knows that the younger monk cannot accomplish his task without a guide, therefore he has arranged that a half-elven ranger from the nearby city be employed as a guide for the elven monk.
