All of the races are good. I suggest choosing the one you like best.

What you buy will be based upon what race and class you deem best fit for you.

New player?

Ok, here I go.
All the base classes and races are well balanced for play, It doesn't matter what you play as long as you are happy with it. My first character was a Half-elf ranger. Why? I didn't want to play a human nor face the stat adjustments of an elf. There were also 3 other fighters in the party.
If you still cant decide what appeals to you best then I would recomend one of the fighter classes. They have the high hitpoints and can deal out the damage at low levels. You tend to survive with them. You might also ask your DM, they should be able to tell you what everyone else is playing and can reckomend what niche' in the party they think should be filled.

I hope I've helped, I tried to refrain from writing out the players handbook.

Edit- Unless you want to buy it all yourself consider the packages given at the end of each class entry. They are well balanced for newer gamers. After you learn what weapons you like, what armour looks good, then you can start to buy what you like.
