Possible hobbies: fishing, bird watching, gambling, wood carving, music, writing, swordplay, reading, collecting things, painting, taxidermy (sp?). And so on. Just because your character is a psion doesn't mean his hobbies have to relate to his adventuring career.

Hi Hidrolix,

First things first, kudos on wanting to be more than just a block of statistics and class abilities. I promise you, you'll have more fun this way.

Darkdrow gave you lots of good suggestions for hobbies. I suggest picking one thats easy to perform while traveling, like bird watching, wood carving, or collecting. Maybe he collects coins from other countries/nations/kingdoms, or something like that.

If/when you decide on a hobby, I suggest doing a few google searches about it to learn more about it. Learn what tools are involved, what terminology you'll need to use, and so on.

In addition to hobbies, try to think about behaviour. What can really bring a character to life is the way he does things. The way he talks, the way he eats, how he dresses, etc. Does he smoke a pipe? Does he go to bed early? Does he snore, pick his nose, hum to himself when he's nervous, chew his nails, say a prayer before eating..? All that kind of stuff is what really makes a character become realistic and individual.

Cooking is a great hobby to have, since it gives you great opportunity to role play with your fellow player characters. It also gives you things to do in town, as you look to buy spices and stuff to improve your hobby.

hey, with all locations being "two weeks journey", someone has to make the meals and cook the game for all to eat. Might as well be you.

It is always fun to play a character who is a traveller and goes seeing the world when the others are having their down time.

The man is once again on a treck. He is promised to be back to your next adventure... But can you really trust him to do that? After all, he is behaving as if he is always on one.
Take a couple of cross-class ranks in survival.

And if you want to stick to your of studying bodies you can have the adventure as a 'front'.
And the man arrives in the town after that. People do not remember him, nor will they remember him when they leave. They will be all to occupied with investigating who dug up all graves in one evening and 'violated' the corpses.
So are you good or not?
Perhaps this is too grim for you.
The man reaches his next stop. The village of Adnjyrnjyll that is plagued by a dangerous disease. The man offers the villages that he will aid those sick on one condition. He will be allowed to use the bodies of those already dead for studies so that he might create a better cure.
Perhaps crossranks in bluff or telepathy or in order to better convince people?

Otherwise... You can be entirely benevolent. Perhaps having taken an oath: "when I see the world I will always offer aid to those who need it and ask for it, or those who need it and ask for it". "If I do so they will the same to me".

Why would your character do this? Perhaps he loves this lifestyle, perhaps he hate the life where he came from. His powers manifested abruptly, perhaps he shunns home and rather spends his days wandering? Or perhaps he only wants to see everything in the world so that he, when he is about to die, can settle down in the best place on it.

What suits your fancy?

(Note: I support this notion. Being the cook is cool. Everyone loves the chef.)

hobbies are great, but they are only really fun if you can incorperate them into your game with role playing without slowing the game down... bird watching, for instance, would kinda be hard to roleplay ( um, as we are walking, i look for birds?)

im a big fan of interactive hobbies, such as riddles and the halfling question game. the latter i simply LOVE to do, because it can drive the other party members crazy whenever they ask a question and get a question right back at them! i once played a halfling that considered every question asked of him an invitation to play the game, and whenever the reply to his question wasnt a question in return, he did a victory dance.... lots of comic relief.

For instance, in that situation, the DM might allow a "Knowledge: Birds" to tell what kind of bird makes the calls you are hearing, or work out something about that species. If there are Greater Warble-Finches in the area, and you know they only eat the eggs of Carrion Crawlers, then you know there are some crawlers nearby.

Also, think about how your character got into the hobby. One of my characters is a half-elf, who grew up in a human village where elves were hated. He was beaten the local kids, and so took to drawing. He could find a small place away from everyone else, and sit there quietly. If he had gone birdwatching, or fishing, then the other kids might have found him.

I did that with my halfling Barbarian... the group ate like kings with the profession (cook) checks I made :P
