I'm just wondering on tips as far as how to RP one who's currently living his life on the surface of Toril. What I have so far is that he was originally a prisoner of war. Taken as a child during a drow raid (NOT Blingdenstone!) that destroyed his city. He was bound in slavery for a decade and a half and trained as a warrior. He became valuable enough to the drow house that although he would never become a citizen, he was treated better than just a mere orc slave. Meaning he got his own personal cell. For reasons I haven't decided apon yet, he gained the opportunity to escape during a surface raid on an elven community that went wrong. However the elves saw him killing their own and naturally were hell-bent on having him tried despite the fact that his former oppressors were no longer around. Having seen enough of elven justice, he escaped and made a somewhat bloody exit from the community. Not remembering much of his people, knowing his city to be gone and that the drow still remain, he's had little cause to return to the Underdark and search blindly for another community so he remains on the surface. That's what I have thus far. Another player who doesn't know what he's going to be yet will be my traveling companion and knows all of this so there's a bit of backstory yet to fill in. My question is, how would you do this character? He's a Svirfneblin, so while not seen as evil, he probably arises suspicion in most surface communities that actually know what he is. He's Lawful Neutral, so while he doesn't actively seek trouble, when it comes to him, he refuses to let them walk over him, so is a bit stubborn and set in his ways. His outlook on life is somewhat jaded and bleak; he retains the same work ethic of his race, only he channels it into his martial prowess as opposed to mining and other pursuits. It's a Gestalt game and I'm allowed to use the LA on one side, so I'm currently considering Svirfneblin 3/Monk 5//Ranger or Rogue 8. Fights with the combination of katana one-handed and unarmed fighting. |

I think I can see a few ways to go: 1) Watch Unleashed (a reasonable ok movie with Jet Lee and Bob Hoskins). Essentially, your character would be very protective to people who he saw as children or innocents (since his childhood/innocence was ripped away from him) and could easily be very brutal towards those who would attack children/innocents. He would likely be very naive about social interactions, particularly those between 'equals,' as it's hard to imagine that he's seen many, and he'd likely have a hard time understanding compassion. Which isn't to say that he'd be against it, and depending on the interaction you see between him and his traveling companion, that could greatly modify things. 2) He could be very, very bitter and hate just about everything. This would make social interaction difficult, at least until he's given a reason to change (some one doing something selfless for him, or maybe even just awareness of a selfless act). Before whatever change may occur, I'd see this as a neutral (CN?) or Evil alignment (CE, NE). He's essentially out for himself, and possibly revenge on the drow (and possibly not). 3) He could be sickened by his combative ways in the past. He might be trying to make a break with the violence that's reared him. Maybe start going nuts in Cleric or Scout or something, and try to help people. 4) He could also just be nuts ;) Stress does funny things to people. But that's almost a cop out in RPing stuff, as you could do whatever and just say 'I'm nuts, why not?' |
