I plan to be a swashbuckler in my next campaign but the thing is, well theres not a lot of water around. So far hes an elf that grew up with a merchant father who did trading with some swashbuckling pirate types. After he was a little bit older he worked with them and learned to fight and stuff. How should I progress???

Swashbuckler isn't necessarily nautical. Think Zoro or Three Musketeers. An elf could could easily pick it up from hanging around with courtiers or what not. Although Pirate is certaintly one way to go.

Your character left home. Maybe he was bored. But maybe he killed a man. Prehaps the local magistrate's son. In a drunken duel. Why not?

To become a Dread Pirate, you need 8 ranks Appraise - not a swashbuckler class skill. If you want to sink the points into buying it cross-class, you could go Swash.13/Pirate7 - very respectable. Or you could take a couple levels of rogue and go Swash.8/Rogue2/Pirate10. Or whatever. Rogue is a good choice, and it makes sense for a swashbuckler to have sneak attack, IMO - if you're going to go around stabing at people with a rapier - and you're good at it - you're going to learn how to hit vital organs and what not. If you'd rather not go rogue, bard would work just as well (no sneak attack, though). Or you could do Swash.10/Exemplar#/Pirate#, if you don't think that's too ridiculus.

I currently have a Swash.1/Fighter2 character that I just started. He was the childhod friend of a nobleman's son in his hometown. Upon reaching adulthood, his aristocratic friend went to the city to study (law?), and my swashbuckler joined the local malitia. After a few years, his friend returned to town, took over his father's manor (the father passed away), and made my character his personal assitant/compainion/sergeant-at-arms. He also stole away my character's true love, igniting a huge and public scandle.

Shortly thereafter, my character was escorting his leige on journey when some small disaster struck - a fall from a horse? ambush by bugbears? - and the nobleman was killed. My character would surely be blamed for the death if he returned home; he had motive and opportunity. So he set out on his own.

I played a really wierd halfling swashbuckler once. He was a really small halfling who loathed everyone who was larger than him, trying to act aloof and superior, while he really was jealous and angry at his sorry lot in life. He had anger problems and insulted people alot. (Even calling the arch-bishop an ape!) His size didn't give him a good intimidate check but he tried to intimidate people anyways. His name was Sir Wellsley Greenbottle. I would advise that you give your swashbuckler some really sharp lines to throw at enemies during combat. Also, give your character a very outgoing personality. He should probably be overly daring or brave or something like that. But maybe that's just me. (I like playing funny characters) I've played a mad lich favoured soul and a gnome warlock who stole magic items from his party while they slept. (He claimed that he had "just found them" and "couldn't hear" any further questions.)

Good luck with your character.
