Designing a longsword that is more or less a weapon created by one of the gods, the blade itself grows in power as the wielder does. (designed for a 2-person game, that is much more RP than hack n' slash).

I need helps with names for the sword, as I am not coming up with any I really like. The name can be good, evil, any language, etc. Suffice it to say that one of things the blade will eventually manifest is a holy/unholy aura based on the alignment the character is at that point, so maybe that should be kept in mind.

Any suggestions are appreciated. :dancin:

How about Fearghall (pronounced "FAY ar-hall" almost like "Farrell" which has the same root and meaning). It is Irish Gaelic for "victorious".

The spelling can be adjusted as desired, as Gaelic is very pliable in that regard

Do you want an actual name, or a title?
Name - Title
Libris'Sangus - The Balance of Blood
T'chanrazor - The Brand of Chaos
Mortschtafferstuun - The Bad-@ss Sword of Doom.
Nex Necis - The Bloody Death

Which god created it (if known)? What kind of character will wield it?

I'm using the Forgotten Realm pantheon of deities, and while I have the FRCS and the Deities and Pantheon books, I'm struggling to figure exactly which deity would have crafted a weapon like this. So if anyone has any advice on that, as well, it is MOSTwelcome. (I'm thinking a neutral or somewhat indifferent deity, because the weapon adapts to the alignment of the character using it, and it would seem only a deity that just wanted entertainment value from the blade and its users would create a weapon that's power would alter slightly with alignments of those wielding it.)

The character that will be wielding it is a female Aasimar Favored Soul of Mielikki (the blade type has actually been changed to Scimitar, instead of Longsword to accomodate this, but its still a sword, so its all good) who is chaotic good.

Thank you and keep those ideas coming! :dancin:

Well, one way or another, Gond is a likely prospect for an origin to the blade. He is very neutral, and a god of creation, and so would very likely craft blades to be of use to those with no consideration for any sort of morality in its use.

Keeping that in mind, the weapon's ability to grow in power along with its wielder would be considered the weapon's major function (which would most likely be the case regardless of crafting deity, but for a deity of crafting, is almost certain), and the name of the weapon would be focused on that. I can't really come up with anything off the top of my head, but it's a good angle to work off.

Good luck.

It might help if you suggested what "flavor" of name you want...Greek, Latin, Old English, Modern English, Gaelic (Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Gallic or "other"), German, Norse, French, etc.

Fearghall is Irish Gaelic.

I'm of the belief that many magic items, no matter the god, can be named in Draconic. Pick up Draconomicon or Races of the Dragon, crack open the section on the draconic vocabulary, and pick a good throat-wrenching name.

Perhaps something simple, that reflects its abilties being reliant on the user? The Soul Blade works for that. Of course, you could name it based on what it does. As we have very little idea of what that is, we are hard pressed to come up with a name that way.

Good point, and until today I hadn't ironed out exactly what would be on the sword's abilities. They may seem a bit unbalanced, although its largely an RP game, and combat will be mostly to further the story. And as I said, its a 2 person game (1 player and 1 Dm)
Here is the list of abilities and the character level they will be received:

Level Ability
1 - +1 enchantment
2 - Resistance +1 (like a cloak of resistance +1)
3 - +2 Spot and Listen Checks
4 - adamantine properties
5 - Enfeebling Criticals [1d6+1 strength damage on confirmed
critical hit]
6 - Brilliant Light [Bright Light to 20ft, Shadowy Illumination to
40ft]
7 - Damage Reduction 2/-
8 - +2 enchantment
9 - Keen
10 - Resistance +2
11 - Tongues, Nondetection
12 - Infused Energy [can select Fiery, Frost, etc. for +1d6
damage on a melee attack]
13 - +3 enchantment
14 - Holy/Unholy [as alignment dictates, taking suggestions for
what to have on it for neutral]
15 - Fly, Resistance +3
16 - +6 enchancement bonus to Strength, Dexterity, Constitution
17 - +4 enchantment
18 - +6 enchancement bonus to Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma
19 - +5 enchantment, returning
20 - Vorpal, Fast Healing 3

any suggestions/comments/ideas about other things to add to the sword are welcome, as well.

Long time ago my Drow fighter carried 2 Longswords.

1 Named "Nightstar"
the other "Soulburn"

Nightstar:
+5
1d6 Ice dmg
Was able to steal HP for my Drow

Soulburn:
+5
1d6 Fire dmg
Was able to dispell Magic when hit

Both weapons where inteligent and always tried to overwhelm Duagloth (my drow)

Nightstar had the soul of a femal elf Bladesinger
Soulburn had the soul of a CE Demon.

Hmm i should play a new drow hrm....

Aeh well just guessing the Names where good:)

Okay then, how about (in Latin):
"The Catenatus" - "The bound Sword" as in bound to the character's soul.
"Implexis" - as it's 'entwined' with the character's soul.

I personally like "Implexis" just coz it sounds cool. The 14th level power (holy/unholy) could extend to Axiomatic/Chaotic if the PC's lawful or chaotic neutral. Perhaps a "balance" special ability could be made - +2d6 damage against anyone LG, CG, LE or CE, if the weilder is true N. Or they just get to pick one, either or.

Okay, so it's a scimitar that gets better as you level up? This won't be as cool as the latin names, but how about "Waxing Crescent"? Plays off the moon image of the scimitar.

flax?

If elven, how about something meaning "to bloom".

Take the word "Effloresce", then elf it up a bit: Efflorethseer the blooming blade? The flower of steel?

"The Tear of Mielikki"

Good double meaning for tear - a tear from her divine eye, the scimitar is going to tear you in half.

You could create a nice backstory around how a tear of Mielikki's fell on the scimitar of her avatar and gave it these powers, etc...

I have a sword for my warmage that I am playing in a homebrew world named Lanos'Dakar which translates as Death's Fangn or The Fang of Death however you want to say it. But it is a weapon that gains power as I do and matches its alignment to the character wielding it.

with the whole sword naming thing...try using words from other languages such as :Koleaharasume(ice wind) or yamihikari(darklight). i like the whole idea, and i have two named swords in a gestalt campaign that are co-operation legacy weapons. they are the muramasa and the angujiki muramasa is a katana and angujiki is a wakizashi

It seems that the abilities you have there don't really support any specific theme; they're certainly good abilities, but they don't imply any partcular mood or personality for the blade itself. Of the abilities you list, are there any which you feel genuyinely define the blade over the others? If you had to cute it down to only two or three abilities which best characterise the blade, what would you choose (setting aside power concerns - just go for flavour).

Another question - is it a metagame idea that the blade will become holy or unholy depending on your character's alignment, or an in-game one? I ask because if it's an in-game idea (that the blade actually starts off in as a neutral item which can be influenced), you might want to give it a name which suggests potential somehow. Check languages you like the sound of for words that deal with latent power, potential, emptiness - that kind of thing.

Now, since I am a hopeless anime fanfag, I'd be thinking something like this:

senshinryoku (potential power)
senzaiteki (latent/potential)
senzai (potentiality/dormancy/latency/)
kokuu (empty space/empty sky/)
utsuro (blank/cavity/hollow/empty)

...But those to impose a very distinct Japanese sound, which you may not like as much as I do. Still, if you google up some translation sites (or pull out langauge books regarding your favourite elves/dragons/whatever), you could probably find some nifty names based on that.

they are the muramasa and the angujiki, muramasa is a katana and angujiki is a wakizashi

muramasa is also the name of Auron's legendary weapon in FFX and angujiki is the name of the sword from Shinobi the PS2 game, both good games. Anyway how about (*note they are all taken from IMO the best DnD game to date Baldurs Gate)
