| Gilrion06-22-04, 09:04 PM | Well, has the player provided any sort of background for his character? If he has, I suggest you use it to link him to the plot. If not, I'd ask him for one. It need not be a 100-page dissertation on the character's life, but a reason for him to be out of his homeland is nice. Perhaps he was expatriated for dishonouring his lord or clan, or he is sent on a mission by him. What is the campaign's purpose? Is there a grand enemy? If so, including it in the reason is a great hook for the character. Forgotten Realms does have a far away land that is very similar to an oriental setting. It seems natural the character would hail from there, but perhaps he could come from a different plane, either a prime or something else altogether. Integrating the character into the group shouldn't be too difficult, either. Once they see he is a fighter-type (albeit an exotic one for these parts) with the same goals as they, they should have no problems accepting him. As far as handling a character in a foreign setting, there are lots of hooks you can use, and great stuff to roleplay. First of all, consider the dalesmen's general reactions to outsiders. Do they know of people like him? Do they fear him or worship him? Consider the character's reactions as well. Many good adventures can pop up just through the foreign nature of the character. Use this. Good luck. If you want more concrete help, I think we will need a greater level of detail. |

One of my players wanted to play a wiz in OA, so we had his history be that he was captured in his homeland and used in some kind of strange ritual. His body was scared with strange designs and he would have flash backs of this torture at time seeing strange faces with strange armor on using wierd magic and languages. In the end he awoke in OA setting not knowing where he was or why he was there. The player had to put ranks into language to learn the native togue and I was able to spring these flashback on him when I felt like it. He had a ruff time with NPCs as far as trusting and comunicating. After all was said and done it was a pretty cool RP opportunity and I had time to work out what happen to him and how he ended up there. |
