So, my chaotic good human swashbuckler managed to become Warchief of a gnoll tribe. What's the CG thing to do in that situation?

He got the title entirely accidentally, of course. Was challenged to a duel by the chief, didn't realise that victory meant rulership, and now the gnolls do his bidding.

This is a great opportunity to teach the Gnolls how to alter thier way of life and become good or atleast neutral. As thier chief your behavior will be emulated, but unless you want to wake with a knife in the throat it will be important not to completely change thier culture over night. try embrassing some of thier traditions, dress, learn the language etc. That is of course if you want this to be a long term thing. Or you could arrange to lose to the next best leader for the tribe. A cleric in back up will help in that situation.

Another option will be to direct thier war like tendancies to reduce the population of other evil creature such as orcs. Mind you Like the idea of a horde of Gnolls being led by a human, it seems a strange and interesting imagry.

Well, that is an interesting turn of events. As a related notion, in the Races of the Wild, they have Gnolls in there, and they talk about how some of them are trying to give up there evil ways. They attest they have only been evil because they knew no other way. Perhaps you can show them one?

As for not waking up with a knife in your ribs, that might not be aviodable. I can only imagine that some of the Gnolls will really dislike the idea of a puny human running the show. Definetely watch your back.

I am not sure I agree with the "ridiculing there culture" idea. At first, i would embrace it, and try and slowly change it. In this situation, drastic change can bring drastic death.

Using them to depopulate the other evil beings in the area does have merit.

Just remember, in their culture, might makes right. Perhaps try and show them otherwise?

Well, see, I'm not convinced gnolls are capable of change. Their racial description specifically says that any alliances they make fall apart once they get hungry.

If this were a group of Orcs, sure, I'd try to make them Good, but I don't think that's possible with Gnolls, hence the problem.

I can't lose the cheiftainship back for the simple reason that it isn't just "win a duel" so much as "kill the old chief." DM didn't even give me any warning... but I took the chief's large incisors as a trophy of my win, and he told me after the session that wearing those teeth means I have the respect of all the gnolls and am considered their leader.

I suppose I could just leave them, not wear the teeth, etc, but that just seems like a waste of an opportunity. Problem is, an opportunity to do what?
