This is a series of characters I'm making, through several different campaign settings. This one is for the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, from the region of Chult.

Name: Osei
Race/ Gender/ Age: Fire Genasi - Male - 24
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Religion: Respects Helm and Ubtao but is worships no being.
Single Defining Class: Psion (seer)
Description: 5'11'' with the dark skin and curly brown hair typical of Chultans. A wiry build indicates he grew up in the jungle and knew difficult environments in his past. He dresses simply, with precious items hidden to avoid encouraging thieves.
When angry, the veins in his head and wrists start glowing from red to gold and white-hot, like veins of magma under rock. In addition, when manifesting his psionic powers, their displays also betray his heritage. Visual displays: a ring of harmless fire, plus his pupils dilate as the irises of his eyes burn white-hot, creating the image of a full eclipse in his eyes. Auditory displays: the sound is of a high pitched whistle over the noise of burning flames (which roar like a forest fire for his most potent powers). Olfactory displays: the smell usually instills in people nearby a memory of something burning. Mental displays: in addition to a mental chime, witnesses of his power feel a sense of heat in their minds, from a low warmth for the weaker powers to a searing heat for his strongest, although this temperature exists only in the mind and causes no pain or discomfort.
Greatest Strength: His tenacity, deductive ability, and sheer mental discipline.
Greatest Weakness: His antisocial tendencies and lack of patience for others.
Traits and Mannerisms: Very analytical. Fond of lateral thinking problems. Has a strong sense of justice, which in his view trumps the laws of society. His goal is to correct the 'flaws' in the minds of all thinking beings which cause criminal behavior. To this end, he not only works as a bounty hunter, but occasionally trains others with psionic talent and encourages civic responsibilty and common law among people he meets.
Modus Operandi: Osei is a bounty hunter, and a damn professional one. He will take several days off each month from his work, as he realizes the mind needs downtime to strengthen. When he does take a mark, he is completely dauntless. He prefers to track a mark as far as possible through only mundane means (Urban Tracking) so as not to trigger any magical or psionic warnings the perp may possess. He will manifest Trace Teleport, True Seeing, and Mind Probe along with use of his Inquisitor feat to get around situations where mundane investigation proves insufficient. When a mark 'goes to the wild', he prefers to hire (or ally with) an NPC (or PC) with the Track feat than to manifest Remote Viewing. At high levels, he needs only see the mark in person once, then Metafaculty ensures the mark will have nowhere to hide. When closing in, Osei likes intimidate the mark with mental messages in hopes they will make a mistake. He will try to seperate the mark from any possible allies, then burn his powers to capture the mark as quickly as possible. He is not afraid to turn deadly should deadly force be used against him, but he prefers Concussion Blast, Ego Whip, and Telekinetic Manuver for nonlethal takedowns. He is cooperative with the law to a point (they buy his meals and board) but he does not depend on evidence they may need (they can't verify his Read Object on a murder weapon). Also, he will not take marks he feels are innocent in his eyes (political dissidents, among others). Lastly, if he feels the punishment the mark will face is inadequate or unfitting, he will add his own, which is mostly intimidation through psychic powers. At high level he saves Mind Seed for the most hardened and evil criminals.
Background: A child from one of the elusive tribes of fire genasi in Chult, early manifestation in his adolescence brought on the side effect of memory loss. He was found wandering in the jungle by adventurers from Tethyr and Tashalar at the age of 17; all his memories from before that are vague and clouded, knowing only the Chultan language and his first name. He assumes his tribe must have either abandoned him or been eradicated. The group of adventurers were bounty hunters chasing fugitives running from Amn and Calimshan, and so he was inducted into the profession. These mentors of his, although unsuited to psionics and not people of incredible virtue, nonetheless installed a powerful sense of justice in the young Chultan. Though working out of the few civilized port-cities of Chult, he will operate as far as Tashalar, the Western Heartlands, the Lake of Steam and even the Vilhon Reach to bring criminals down. In fact, later in his career (above described as his low levels) he will infiltrate the Hall of Mental Splendor in far off Waterdeep.
Quote:(to a mark) "You know the little person in the back of your mind, yes? The eyes who watch every wrong you do? The presence who sees through all your lies, who follows your every move, who will shadow you to the Abyss and back, no matter how far you run to escape your crimes? That's not your conscience; you can ignore your conscience. No, that little voice in the back of your head is ME."
(to a guard irritated by his vigilante attitude) "Law is not my concern, justice is."

Class Arrangement(s): Psion (seer) 16/Cognition Thief 4.
Essential Abilities: Lemme just give you his Stats Using 25-point buy system from DMG (after racial mods): Str 10, Dex 14, Con 14, Int 16, Wis 10, Cha 9.
Essential Skills:Gather Information, Concentration, Spot, Listen. A few cc ranks into Survival, Speak Language, Intimidate, Sense Motive, and Appraise can't hurt. Need 5 ranks in Bluff, Disguise, or Open Lock.
Essential Feats: (I'll give you 'em all, in order taken): Urban Tracking, Inquisitor, Psicrystal Affinity (single minded), Heighten Power, Psionic Meditation, Healing Flames (from Races of Faerun), Quicken Power, Expanded K. (Psychic Revivification), E.K. (Fiery Discorporation), Twin Power, Psicrystal Focus.
Essential Powers: Mind Thrust, Ego Whip, Concussion Blast, most of the Clairsentient powers especially Trace Teleport, Sensitivity to Psychic Impressions, Hypercognition, and Metafaculty, Schism, Psychic Revivification, Psionic Contingency (last two are good combo), Mind Probe, Fiery Discorporation, Energy Conversion, Energy Wall (another good combo), Trace Teleport, True Seeing, Psionic Disintegrate, True Metabolism, Mind Seed. Hey, I can get Mind Seed AND Psychic Chirugery if I take that 4th level of Cognition Thief after reaching char level 18.
Essential Equipment: A spear for when powers aren't necessary or available, a psionatrix cause those things are quite useful, and a cloak of charisma to get around that penalty.
Signature Combat Maneuvers: Send foe into the fetal position with a barrage of Ego Whips (Schism + Quickened Power = good times)
Wrestle foe to ground with Telekinetic Manuver, apply manacles.
The infamous Energy Wall + Energy Conversion power for when things get ugly. Twin 'em walls at high levels and make enemies cry!

All the characters in my series will have the following things in common:
- Career as a bounty hunter
- The Urban Tracking feat
- Psion advancement as a seer
- use of the Metafaculty and Mind Seed powers

This may become a Universal Hero campaign character later. Any suggestions for me or my DM on how to play/challenge?

Awesome! I love that you made his psionics fire-themed, WITHOUT making him just a walking flame thrower. The list of the psionic displays is very cool, BTW. I'll have to remeber that when I make my next psionic character.

TY. I thought it made good use of his race. Besides, I didn't see Pyrokineticist as worth it.
We could make a whole new thread on unique spell thematics/psionic displays.

NEXT ONE UP: THE EBERRON INCARNATION!
I'm going to make this one Kalashtar Seer 10/Illithid Slayer 10.
Now, I want to give this guy a different motivation for bounty hunting, preferably one that will tie into his hatred for the Inspired (maybe he catches criminals to fund a personal guerilla war on the lords of Riedra). I also need a reason why he became an Illithid Slayer ('oh, they're psionic too, and I wanted to become stronger and train by killing them so I can be strong enough to fight the Inspired'=lame), and revenge stories, frankly, get old.
POSSIBLE BACKGROUND: His parents were assassinated by Inspired spies, and he was put in a human orphanage. He quickly befriended another orphan from near (forget the name of the region where the daelkyr and monsters of Xoriat are powerful). She had lost her parents to the mind flayers and her village to the minions of the Plane of Madness, and swore to avenge them. He would come to admire her tenacity, and come to hate the daelkyr - their arrogance and disrespect for life mirrors that of the kalashtar's quori oppressors almost exactly in his mind. So when they were of age, they would go their individual paths, making an oath never to give their enemies peace. Somewhere out there there's a human female Psychic Warrior/Illithid Slayer who probably still remembers him.
FEATS: Track, Urban Tracking (renamed Question for flavor), Investigate, Research, Inquisitor, and the Telepathy Expanded Knowledges that Osei has are all givens. Research is especially useful once he learns how to manifest Hypercognition (+20 to a Knowledge check...whoo....), so he can save skill points on Knowledge skills and still gets some use out of the feat.

Suggestions? Comments?

New builds for Osei and my Kalashtar guy, now that I've found an official WotC ruling sayin PrCs don't incur multiclassing penalties:
Osei: Seer 16/Cognition Thief*4
Kalashtar Guy Who Needs A Name: Rng1/Seer5/Elocater4/Illithid Slayer 10
I should save the 5th level of seer until last to get the Expanded Knowledge with the psionic feat.
Should I give Osei a connection to the Hall of Mental Splendor?

About your Forgotten Realms Bounty Hunter:

Energy Wall + Energy Conversion is a good combination...but it takes a standard action every round to concentrate on Energy Wall. It takes a standard action to fire off a ray from Energy Conversion. Are you just storing up massive amounts of damage in Conversion and then firing later? Or were you planning on using Schism to do a part of this? Could you please clarify?

More possible reasons to go into the Illithid Slayer PrC; I hope they help :)

1) Money. Mind Flayers tend to have nice stuff, if the descriptions of them in novels translate into your campaign. Plus, lots of people will pay you well to kill Mind Flayers. A high potential for profit by exploiting a niche is an excellent reason to specialize. You're calculating and maybe a bit petty, but are very fair. A materialist and a realist, you don't much care about what you do, but rather about what it gets you.

2) Depravity. You really, really enjoy killing things, particularly sentient things. The smarter, the better (inferiority complex, maybe?). Your vast intellect is sufficient to break though your other issues, however; as such, you have sought out a way to express your murderous urges without bringing the wrath of society upon yourself. Illithids a perfect target: every time you kill one, you satisfy your dark impulses, possibly bring yourself one step closer to intellectual dominance of the planet (or not, depending on if you like your sadism with megalomania), and you get a nice big bounty to boot. Plus, the mind-shielding powers of the Illithid Slayer PrC are the perfect thing to conceal a warped psyche.

3) Birth. You come from a proud line, and your ancestors have been killing Mind Flayers for many generations. Some kids are born into nobility, some into poverty, and some into a trade. Your family trade just happens to involve killing things. A dutiful heir to the family business, you can recite your family's history and deeds with ease, and you're surprisingly well-adjusted for someone in your profession: after all, you grew up in a supportive, happy family that taught you a useful skill. Heck, maybe you work alongside your dad.

General note: as you probably know, Illithids usually prefer to save their own skin rather than helping their fellows, so it's probably easier to isolate one from a group than it would be with a more tightly-knit race. This probably suits a bounty hunter just fine.

Not to mention that the Psion/Slayer combo is psychotically powerful? Full BAB and 9/10 caster prog PLUS abilities. Someone should've playtested a bit more :D

Meh, WoTC has done much worse. The Expanded Psionics Handbook is probably the best balanced book they've put out in some time. Of course, the competition is Complete Divine, Eberron, and now Frostburn... yeah, the competition isn't too stiff in terms of balance. There's plenty of precedent for the Illithid Slayer's basic layout, including the Elditch Knight and the Fist of Raziel. I'm not saying the Slayer isn't strong, it is (d8 hitdie and 4+INT skills are particularly generous here), but it follows a now-standard format, and they at least had the sense to put the best abilities at the end of the PrC rather than at the beginning.

Yeah, of course I'm using Schism. Why not? Sorry for not clarifying earlier. Round is spent with Schism either holding the Wall or firing off the ray, move to focus and then a quicken power on top, note to self: either twin or quicken stack (make two in the same place) that Energy Wall.
Do this in a party with a Druid Wildshaped into the immune elemental and you'll be bringin' 'em in dead more often that alive. :D
Thank you for your suggestions! I will see what works with a Ranger1/Seer5/Elocater4/IS10. My big design problem, however, is not Illithid Slayer but reconciling the rather worldly profession of bounty hunter with the spiritualistic outlook of your average kalashtar.

All that I know about the kalashtar comes from here:
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/eb/20040413a

That said, I noticed this bit:
Adventurers: Every kalashtar enters adulthood with a fundamental choice: try to live a normal life as a persecuted exile in Adar, or take up a more active role in combating the Inspired in the world. Unsurprisingly, many kalashtar choose the latter option and live a life at least bordering on adventure. Most kalashtar adventurers are motivated primarily by their hatred of the Inspired, but a few -- primarily those advanced along the Path of Light -- are driven by their compassion for all living beings and their desire to fight darkness in whatever form it takes.
Emphasis mine.

It seems this sort of thing could easily be in keeping with my third idea, hunting as a family tradition. Illithids are certainly a force of darkness, and perhaps your ancestors long ago left off the fight against the Inspired (the reason why might be interesting) to fight another form of darkness. Or, perhaps it was a personal choice. Perhaps you're a hunter of darkness first, and a businessman second: you want to help purify the world, but that takes resources, and that means you need to get paid. You charge only what the customer can afford, and do charity work for those who can't pay. In other words, you're advancing an idealistic goal with pragmatic means, but you always keep the higher cause in mind.

I very much like the idea! Thank you nihility.

Feats so far for our Eberron boy: Track (from level of ranger), Inquisitor (from 1st level of psion), Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack (to qualify for elocator), Urban Tracking (renamed Snoop for flavor), Investigate, Research, Expanded Knowledge [Mind Seed] (from 5th level of psion). Will probably choose the last feat out of Expanded Knowledge [Schism], Twin Power, Quicken Power, Expanded Knowledge [Mind Probe], Close-Quarters Fighting, or Action Boost. Exactly which feat I choose will tip the balance towards him either being a more combat-focused or manifesting-focused class.
Important skills: For maxing, Wilderness Lore, Gather Information and Concentration. For roughly 10 to 15 ranks, Knowledge [Psionics, Dungeoneering, the Planes - Dal Quor and Xoriat probably] Search, Sense Motive, Spot, and Listen. For 5 or less ranks, Tumble, Appraise, and Swim.

Now the Eberron version is up!

Name: Lehatharat
Race/ Gender/ Age: Kalashtar - Male - 27
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Religion: Struggling with faith in Il-Yanna.
Single Defining Class: Illithid Slayer
Description: 6'1'' with the unearthly beauty of the Kalashtar. Likes to tie his black hair back and keep it out of the way. Slight tan. Possesses a slightly boyish face people tend to underestimate.
Greatest Strength: His extensive education on the targets of his choice, patience in keeping on a mark's trail, and highly analytical mind.
Greatest Weakness: His concern for his family and uncertainty about the future. Can push himself too hard if not very careful.
Traits and Mannerisms: A polite, non-profit businessman, he tries to negotiate in as friendly a manner as possible with his employers, as the money is a secondary priority to him. Cares deeply about his family and is slightly upset about the rift in their ranks. Believes that the horrors of Xoriat and Dal Quor are created and powered by the flaws in the minds of the sentient Material Plane beings, and so seeks to correct what he calls 'destructive thinking', accepting marks on some human criminals and Khyber cultists as well as psionic monsters. Lehatharat is a little apprehensive around other kalashtar, as he knows some may feel that his family has abandoned their race.
Modus Operandi: Lehatharat makes a living seeking areas where people are threatened by creations of the Daelkyr and annihilating the offending aberrations. On the side he also hunts down cells of Khyber cultists and mundane criminals who he thinks need 'mental guidance'. He makes a special care to see that, through lectures, intimidation, honest conversation, or even (in extreme cases) direct psionic interference, that any mark he's captured does not think the same way as it did when it committed its crime. He avoids too much normal bounty hunting though - it's not wise for an independent to tread on the toes of a dragonmarked house. Capable of picking up hints about a mark's location, tracking a trail through the wilderness, examining a crime scene for clues, going through libraries for background research on a criminal or organization, and using powers to reveal what would otherwise be completely hidden to normal bounty hunters, Lehatharat can locate almost any target without any help at all. His crusade against aberrations brings him into regular alliance with the Gatekeeper druids. At high level he saves Mind Seed for the most hardened and evil criminals - he's especially fond of using it on humanoids who accept possession by fiends or quori.
Background: Lehatharat was born the youngest in a growing family of kalashtar immigrants, after a brother and a sister. His uncle and and grandfather moved from Adar to Sharn about forty years ago, and his parents followed suit a number of years after Lehatharat's oldest sibling, his brother, was born. In Khorvaire his grandfather found an academic job helping with the research of psionics and the planes, namely Dal Quor but with a little side focus in Xoriat. His uncle and later father would find 'consultant' jobs advising adventurers on how to slay psionic aberrations, and eventually his cousins and brother would take that job up themselves. Lehatharat trained to the same ends, but grew concerned over a rift in the family. Other members of the small Kalashtar community in Sharn accused his relatives of abandoning them to hunt monsters while agents of the Dreaming Dark assassinated a few without fear of retaliation. They also claimed that his family were turning their back on the teachings of il-Yannah by accepting financial recompense. His older siblings, both with children, were particularly split on this. His sister, who had married a Khorvaian human, sided with their family, but his brother felt that they had become to Khorvairized and forgotten their roots. Personally upset, Lehatharat could only turn to the advice of his grandfather, who told him that fighting the darkness of Xoriat and Dal Quor were not mutually exclusive. Although he'd finished his training, Lehatharat laid low until the end of the Last War before launching his bounty hunting career.
Quote:(to a mark) "Silly little criminal. NEVER lie to a mentalist."
(to a Khyber cultist) "I know that you've offered yourself up to so-called greater powers for the promise of safety in paradise. This is merely a result of weaknesses in your thoughts, flaws" *cue intimidating manifestation display* "that I intend to rectify."

Class Arrangement(s): Ranger1/Psion (seer)5/Quori Nightmare/Illithid Slayer10.
Essential Abilities: Lemme just give you his starting stats using 25-point buy system from DMG (no racial mods): Str 10, Dex 14, Con 14, Int 14, Wis 10, Cha 11.
Essential Skills:For maxing, Wilderness Lore, Gather Information and Concentration. For roughly 10 to 15 ranks, Knowledge [Psionics, Dungeoneering, the Planes - Dal Quor and Xoriat probably] Search, Sense Motive, Spot, and Listen. Hide and Move Silently will be useful. Intimidate is needed to enter Quori Nightmare. For 5 or less ranks, Tumble, Appraise, and Swim.
Essential Feats: Improved Toughness, Track (from 1st level of ranger), Inquisitor (from 1st level of psion), Urban Tracking (renamed Snoop for flavor), Investigate, Research, Expanded Knowledge [Metamorphosis], Metamorphic Transfer, Faster Healing, Expanded Knowledge [Mind Seed] (from 5th level of psion).
Essential Powers: Offensive Prescience, Mind Thrust, Ego Whip, Concealing Amorpha, Concussion Blast, most of the Clairsentient powers especially Trace Teleport, Sensitivity to Psychic Impressions, Hypercognition, and Metafaculty, Psionic Contingency, Energy Conversion, Energy Wall (another good combo), Metamorphosis, True Seeing, Temporal Acceleration, Psionic Disintegrate, Telekinetic Manuver, True Metabolism, Mind Seed (must leave 5th level of Psion until char lvl 20 to learn this).
Essential Equipment: Psionatrixes, Headband of Intellect and maybe Cloak of Cha, some decent weapons and light armor, hopefully stuff he can Metamorphose with. Likely Aberration Bane weapons.
Signature Combat Maneuvers: Wrestle foe to ground with Telekinetic Manuver, apply manacles.
The infamous Energy Wall + Energy Conversion power for when things get ugly.
Temporal Acceleration to buy time, usually for manuvering and Metamorphosis.

Edit: Update, discovered the Quori Nightmare from Races of Eberron. Too perfect for this guy.:w00t:

What think ye?
Next up, the generic campaign setting human version. I was going to make him a Thrallherd, and instead of having his personal army follow him around, I tell them to go out into the world - and form an information network.

Plenty of angles and hooks for a DM to follow up on, complexity on a number of levels including how far he's willing to go to stop evil (Mind Seed does have the evil descriptor, after all), and a living, breathing family. Nice work.

Thankee kindly :ayyyy!:
Suggestions for the third incarnation? (who will be the 'generic' version for use in, say, Greyhawk, Union, Sigil, or Ghostwalk for example)
I think after that one I'll give it a rest and suggest that other people start putting up their own Psionic Bounty Hunters, clairsentient or otherwise.

Just a note, but he doesn't seem like a very solid combatant. Is it really all that wise to consider melee as a realistic option for him? I do certainly appreciate the roleplaying aspect of it all, but is it totally practical?

I do certainly appreciate the roleplaying aspect of it all, but is it totally practical?Well no, he's got hp somewhere between a ranger and a bard (closer to bard). But the thing about casters, is when they do get into melee they tend to get owned if they haven't had the time to buff. Lehatharat can survive melee combat long enough to get out of danger, and has a way to save power points on weak encounters (and note, he's got a lvl 17th psion's pp reserve).

Oh, that's not what I meant, I was talking about his low strength score. To clarify, in this instance "solid" meant overall ability rather than just durability. It seems more likely he'd be throwing powers around rather than trying to defeat anything through melee combat.

That's what buffs and equipment are for. Melee is actually quite realistic, especially if he uses Metamorphosis and turns into something huge.
Invarus

12-11-04, 04:04 PM
Actually it doesn't look like he has any buffs or equipment dedicated to making himself physically better able to hit and deal damage. I mean, he doesn't have metamorphosis either, but that's just one power, and he's only listed some of the ones he'd take. Metamorphosis is perfectly valid, in fact, this is the kind of explanation I was looking for, I'd just like his opinion on exactly what buffs he'd use and etc..

Oh, that's not what I meant, I was talking about his low strength score. To clarify, in this instance "solid" meant overall ability rather than just durability. It seems more likely he'd be throwing powers around rather than trying to defeat anything through melee combat.Well, no he's not solid in combat. He's not a melee character, and yes he'd rather throw powers. He does have access to the offensive/defensive prescience/precognition powers, and a number of other powers that may turn out to be more efficient for his situation should combat be smarter than power throwing (True Metabolism, for instance).
The point is, when most psions are caught unbuffed in close combat, they get owned. Lehatharat does not. When most psions are clean out of power points, they are mostly useless. Lehatharat is not.
I'm not making a gish proper, I'm making a less vulnerable manifester. His skills allow him a lot of use outside of combat as well, without spending many (sometimes any) of those precious power points.
Last note: his abilities are just starting stats: heading into high levels there'll be a number of items on top of that.
Invarus

12-12-04, 07:06 PM
By power throwing I meant any concentrated use of powers, rather than simply nuking as hard and fast as possible or something. And I concur that your explanation works just fine.
RadicalTaoist

12-12-04, 11:34 PM
Well, Nuking isn't an effective tactic unless you're a Kineticist, which I'm not. I'll have to settle for Recall Agony and Telekinetic Manuver, which are rather owning.

EDIT: Come to think of it, now that Lehatharat's a Crystal Master instead of an Elocator, why the hell not replace Wounding Attack with Expanded Knowledge: Metamorphosis? He's got bard BAB and HP, might as well...

What about a weak Clairsentient who actually is almost useless in battle, except maybe for one high-level, bomb-like power to finish off particularly hard opponents. Maybe instead of combat, he specializes in Craft (Alcvhemy) and Craft (Trapmaking), or travels with a hulking pile of muscle?

Also, an egoist who sneaks into dangerous areas like a thieves' guild carrying no weapons and not emmiting magic and then transforms amazingly into a huge beasty, spewing acid and rending his opponents. However, this may be a better hunter as a psychic warrior (a very self-sufficient class, with combat abilities, long range attacks with Expanded Knowledge, and healing ability with Body Adjustment).

The second sounds cool but not what I'm looking for. However I'd be glad to help other people develop their own Psionic Bounty Hunters, and it is a pretty cool idea. The whole self-sufficient, Solid Snake atmosphere.

Sweet, WHR kicks teh :censored:
If you want actual optimization of levels and feats and such, drop by my Builds Collection thread (Natty Builds o' Powah, in sig) and I'll be glad to do my thing.
But right now we're in Character Development. ;) What makes your character a Rogue? Is he a diplomat-type or a more stilletto-in-the-dark-type? The skills you've given him seem to peg him as a spy.
Maybe an arsonist of sorts; fire is a useful weapon in the hands of any bounty hunter/saboteur/assassin/whatever. Smoke enemies out of their hiding places, so to speak.
Is this an Eberron campaign? Where is your character and what does he do in the context of the war against Riedra?

Hey I am really interested in playing a Illithid Slayer character soon, we play in FR any tips on how he would know where to find Illithids (he is more of a only kill illithids that are harming people above ground, hes scared of enclosed spaces which is a quirk of his) and such? Thanks for any help, as you are a character designing master!
