Hello all,

For over a year now if been playing a very broad and large campaign. I made a world named Gillian, it has 3 continents and a lot of islands. If wrote about 5 books about cities and villages nearby the first continent. So the players have a nice worked out world to work in, and develop.

The party is lead by Janno a lvl 10 Paladin, followed closely as best friend by Alex von stachelhof, a neutral good cleric of Pelor. Then there is Naïlo nemrah a chaotic good Ranger. And last but not least there is Selene a wild mage, and her teacher Ashheart (zook) a gnomish sorcerer, who is chaotic neutral.

In short:

Janno paladin lvl 10, lawfull good.
Alex cleric lvl 9, Neutral good.
Ashheart lvl 9, Neutral chaotic.
Selene lvl 9, chaotic good
Nailo, lvl 8, chaotic good.

The party is great to play with, they all play their part, and there role. As some might have noticed all members of the party are able to cast magic, which is difficult sometimes.

But the problem is. Naïlo the ranger has made a few difficult moves. After making allot of “evil” comments, i had to change his alignment to neutral evil. I did not like that because I was afraid it would spoil the campaign. What would happen if a lvl 10 paladin finds out that his best friend is evil (detect evil). I do not want this to be the death of Nailo since its a cool character, and im still afraid it would spoil it.

The problem is, what would happen and how would everyone react. Alex would react to im sure of it. They all agree its difficult and they do not want5 to change that. But they do want to play there roll on the other hand.

My question to all you guys is: How would you DM this section, the day will come Janno will find out. What happens what should I do you think?

Ill, hope you understand my problem,

He should have been really evil to switch from CG to NE. Why not just CN or TN? Why this character switched from a cool dude to a power-angry opportunist?

Does your ranger wish to stay evil? Perhaps is there a way to atone before the other characters find out he is evil. Does he follow a deity? Perhaps if he loose his spellcasting abilities, it would be a nice warning.

Also, you wrote he switched to evil due to some evil comments. Where were all the other PCs when he emited those comments? How did they react?

A suggestion for the paladin: he should receive a "vision" from his god, telling him he has to help a friend to atone. But don't tell which one...

I'm no expert on alignment changes, but wouldn't changing alignments as a ranger (or any other class that has an alignment restriction) cause him to loose all of his magical abilities?

That asside, making "evil comments" doesn't make a person evil. It is in the actions. For example, if a Paladin was trying to get information out of a prisoner, he might allude to (or even actually threaten) torture (certainly not good), but as long as he doesn't actually act on the threats and actively works to prevent it from occuring, he has done nothing worthy of changing alignments. It is really a question of how far the character pushed the line. In this case, it really isn't enough. If you can give more detailed expanations of what the evil comments were, then I may be able to give a more detailed explanation from a philosophical point of view.

I've always been kinda a stickler for alignments

but that was a big alignment change. without magic entirevention people don't just wake up evil one day.

usually you take it one step at a time. first you give a warning. let the player know that their behavior isn't living up to their alignment.

next you bump their alignment one step on one axis. for example, lawful good - lawful neutral.

if they still continue to act evil then you give them another warning. if it continues another alignment bump.

like i said, for someone to dramatically shift alaignments something big has to happen. there's a current movie out that's a prime example of this.

personally i don't like to make charaters set their alignment right away. i like to let them kinda get into character before they do that.

Remember, as Chaotic Good, Nailo has his own personal code of ethics that he believes is "good." The code should be heavily based on the God that he worships.

Also, at least the way my group plays the game, that it is what the character does that has an effect on his alignment, not what he says. I routinely play Bards that say very evil things to get them into places they shouldn't be in order to do "good" things.

So, thats my take on your problem. Perhaps your character should find the priest of his God and have a talk.
