Hello all.

I have seen so many foundations across the bulletin boards, and would like to start my own. Welcome to the ROLE-Players Guild. I use a capital ROLE to differentiate from ROLL-players, aka Hack-and-slashers.

If you would like to join, please e-mail me at my link at the bottom of the message, and I will review you're works and most likely invite you in. And now for a short bit about what we're looking for:

If you write the minimum background for your character just to get whatever details that are needed, or rely more on combat than social situations at the gaming table, then this club is not for you.

If, however, you pour your heart and soul into your character backgrounds and role-playing skills, you just might have a place with us.

That being said, what follows is a list of the current members:
Dragan_Timeripper: Founder and Member #0001
Kalniel: Member #0002
Ramone: Member #0003
Kaervek: Member #0004

More shall be added as we expand. I shall also be hosting a webpage for this site as well. Thank you all, and happy gaming.

You should get permision to copy all the character contest posts to a website.

It'd make an awesome resource for people to either have pre-generated characters with roleplaying potential, or just for people to look at and see some good examples of character depth, usually created in a very short space of time (2 hours maximum for me going from deciding to create a character to completion, including a dinner break!)

It doesn't need to take a lifetime to create some life for your character.... :)

PS:

Pssst. You might want to get rid of your con signature sentance. People might think you're meta-gaming or something :p [j/k]

Hello Kalniel. That's a good idea. I'd like to pool all members together for this. My character will be listed on the website (actually both of em, as I have a character in the Over 17 area with a kewl background that I'd like commentary on). If anybody else okays it, just e-mail me their background, or just tell me alright, and I'll add it to the site. Thanx for the suggest, kal.

Likewise, I'm not trying to metagame. I'm minimaxing...there's a difference :) Plus, the advantage is so glaringly obvious, I always give my characters an odd Con, as it gives me something to use one of the 5 (odd number) boosts on.

Well you have my permission to add Irilan of course.

Even min-maxing is an interesting topic for role-playing. But because con is so useful, I find it actually only adds to a character concept when it is low. Ie high con doesn't give you a roleplaying handle, but low con usually does. Obviously there are some exceptions, like the sturdy dwarf.

So in Irilan's case, as a player, I know that con would be benifitial in combat and general longevity. But having higher cha adds more to being able to role play a character concept.

So the min-maxing has a different outcome here. I've maximised the stats that have a bearing on character concept, and minised those whose increase has a purely game mechanic advantage, thus turning them into role playing stats in some cases (not having high con fits with a slender figure for example).

I beg to differ about high con not having role playing potential. Elves are usually frail and easily broken, but then along comes the odd elf with a 16 con, who's tough as nails, even better, give him the stay conscious feat (if he's not a barbarian) and he'd even tougher, cuz he dosn't stay down unless he's dead.

I have a quick question about foundations/guilds.

Do they serve any practical purpose beyond something to include in your signature? I find some of the foundation names good for a laugh, but I’m not sure what they do beyond that.

I do like the ROLE-playing aspects of RPG’s. I’ve explained the goal of D&D to non-gamers as the interactive creation of a good story. I think that at the end of a successful campaign, everyone should be thinking: “Wow! This would have made an awesome novel, television series, or movie.”

Hello Moebius. I've already responded to one of your posts that you would make an great member of the ROLE-Player's Guild, and I look foreward to you joining us. You will be assimilated. Resistance is feudal...sorry, went off on a tangent there.

Concerning the purpose of guilds/foundations, they are more than something extra to put in your signature. They are a chance to show everybody what you believe in, and a chance to find common ground with others who share your theories about gaming.

At least for this guild, they are a badge of honor, a mark that you have achieved a level of excellence with your character concept and literary style. This is more done for helping out others who are either new to the area of RPGs or who are having trouble composing a good background.

The greatest evidence of our longing to help is our webpage, which I am currently working on. It should be up by the end of the week, and if any other members of the guild consent to having their character up, just tell me and I will do so.

Thank you for your honesty in your questions. Happy gaming.

Good case. I did say there were some exceptions :) Maybe I should have said that high con is not normally used for roleplaying potential.

Sheesh, I think low Charisma can be used for roleplaying potential as well. It's not the stats, but the way you use those stats, which make for good roleplaying.

Sounds interesting. I think I'll join in spirit rather than officially since I don't really feel the need to be a member of another group. But, you do have permission to use my UnCon entry unless Wizards says no (they do own everything posted.)

Hello all. Just writing to say that the first bit of the webpage for the guild is now up. You can view it at http://www.compineduc.com/ryan/dndguild/index.html.

If you see any way I can make it better or anything to correct, just e-mail me at the bottom of the signatures. Also, Kalniel, please e-mail me so I can get you into the database. Thanks.

Nice - that must have taken a bit of effort to get in :)

It's already reading like some official module or something.

Dragan - Nice work, I'm impressed. I was starting to feel all alone in "our" world. It's good to see I'm not.
The other players in our group barely have enough imagination to put a name to their characters, and that tends toward Joe, Bee, Doc or Lucky. Their descriptions tend to be eye, hair, height, weight with possibly a side note stating they are stunningly handsome. My DM while starting a game will ask us each to describe ourselves, both the guys I play with just roll their eyes when I start reading a half page description of my character with names niether of them can pronounce . I try to keep my histories short but even short they tend to be at least a half page. Our other players don't even bother.
Anyway, as I was saying. Good job, I've bookmarked your site and will definitly submit, I just have to make some time.

You all realize that roll and role playing are not inherently better than eachother, nor are they mutually exclusive, right?

I have a question... do submissions have to be of the D&D type? I mean, yes, this is a D&D board, but I'm sure some of us play other systems/games that allow for some great RPing experiences. For instance, I played in a Demon (White Wolf) campaign last year, and I had a great experience with it, and it was one of my first truly RP'd characters. It is, however, a modern-day setting, and wouldn't quite go along with the rest of the site.

Also, may I suggest a change in format of the site? If membership continues to grow, it will become quite annoying to find a particular character. A navigation bar would be useful (eventually).

Yes, we (I, at least) realize that role-playing and roll-playing are factually neither better nor worse than the other. However we (again, I, at least) prefer to role-play, and are of the opinion that it is superior (more fun). I'd also like to argue that these aren't mutually exclusive terms, as one can intrude on the other.

I prefer the term "blend the two", not "intrude upon eachother".

Anyhow, I prefer Roleplaying to pure numbers, but I'm not joining since I happen to dislike joining foundations. But I will watch here with interest, and maybe proke my head in and say something.

Unfortunately, for the webpage I wrote, I only would like Dungeons and Dragons material on it (ie no Hackmaster, Dinky Dungeons, GURPS, etc). I might expand the site later on to cover other areas, but it's just DnD for right now.

I have a lot of changes in store for the site. A navigation bar is just one of them. I'm also gonna post the guildhall layout and stats on the person doing the speaking. However, at the time, I have more ideas than I do time to enact them, and so will slowly implement the mentioned changes.

Hey, I minimax as well, and I love killing orcs after a hard day at the office. However, for normal roleplaying, I find it infinitely more fun to play the character's motivations and flaws to the hilt.

Dragan, have you seen the character contest boards recently? They're going to remove them in a week or so, so people are generally willing for you to put entries on the website.

Hello Kalniel. Yes, I've seen that. I can only do so much coding at a time, and right now I'm devoting my every waking moment when I'm not doing more critical things to coding the webpages.

That's one of the main advantages to our guild, the chance to get your character immortalized (kinda) in our guildhall. I've got two submissions in the works right now, and as soon as I hear back from the other members, I'll post it.

Trust me, though, I'm doing everything I can for the guild. Anyways, could you please send me your e-mail addy so I can incorporate you into the guild (read the guidelines page for more information). Thank you.

Hello All,

My apologies for not updating the webpage, nor for posting. About a week and a half ago, my house was broken into and my computer stolen. All my information is gone, and I'm currently in a conundrum about it, as I had over 15k of software and custom-scripted programs on it.

As soon as I'm able, I'll get back to the two individuals who applied for membership, and get the webpage updated. Thanks for your understanding in this trying matter.
