"Where have the years gone? Adventuring to the far corners of civilization, to the highest of mountains, lowest of valleys... everywhere I have been, I suppose... I have been all these places following visions not belonging to me, but to the more imaginative and charismatic men, the ones who could paint glorious pictures with only their words. Yes, there was a time when mere words, honeyed portrayals of what a future could be could motivate this arm, these legs. No more, though. I am tired... not old, but very, very tired. I want to find a home, to rest, to reflect upon the decade so quickly spent.
"And yet I still wander the lands, searching for something to do with myself. Every time I have bought a house, I have sold and left it only a month after. Cities, towns, villages... nowhere I have tried to settle have I found peace. I don't suppose I can find peace in any one place; it is a curse of an adventurous spirit... no matter how tired I might be. 'Find a woman', my jovial bard friend told me as our paths split, 'She'll keep you busy, she will.' But for all the wisdom of my companion's words, even when I find a good woman I seem to find myself a passenger on her road rather than living a shared life. Perhaps I am not meant to marry; it makes little difference to me, so long as I find something to do to keep myself from going insane...
"I've spent a great portion of my life following other people's dreams... perhaps it's time for me to follow my own..." the seasoned adventurer thought to himself, quietly observing a group of teenagers spar in a chalk-lined circular arena. He smiled as he saw one of the boys parry skillfully and strike his final opponent with his wooden blade, "Then again, it may be time for me to bring another dreamer to greatness." The man stood slowly and moved to winner to congratulate him on his victory.

When my current campaign ends, I'm hoping that the main GM in my group will decide to run another D&D game. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to play the entire campaign as I hope to be leaving for university a short time after the semester ends... so I thought I'd play a character of an archetype that's easy to write in and out of a story (which means I might be able to make a cameo into the game again this Christmas. :P ) I also happen to like this character because he does not share my usual characters' motives, and yet I can still identify with him (I have a hard time "just relaxing", as opposed to seeking out things to do and doing them [hence my activity on these boards. :P])

So what do you guys think of what I have so far? What should I add? What adventures should he remember best? What class(es) is this character? Any other ideas? I'll give him a name when I think of a name. lol!

Thanks!

That's almost as good as Rutger Hauer's death scene in Blade Runner. Very nice!

My initial reaction was archivist/scribe/bard or cleric of Fharlanghn, but then the line about watching younger men spar and being inspired leads me to believe that he was a fighter of some sort, perhaps monk?

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :P

Yeah, I was thinking he's a seasoned fighter... maybe not Fighter, fighter, but a melee combatant of some sort. I'm not sure about monk, as I imagine them as more spiritual folk... whereas this man seems to be searching for a calling.

Actually, I'd like monk as a character choice for him. Not all monks are part of heavy, spiritual organizations... The monk's training of sharpening the body and mind also works for him, as he'd obviously need a fit body to do all this wandering, and plus, he might think that by sharpening his mind, his goal will become clearer. That by knowing more about his physical and mental needs, he might find out how to fulfill his ultimate mental need. Of course, this is just my two cents- I only said it because the first thing that came to mind when I read about him was monk.

Sounds like a grizzled ranger with a tired smile :)

grizzled ranger or even youthful-yet-overly-aged swordsage.

OSC's Treasure Box is a great example of the character archeptype.

As usual a very nice job M_V.

I like the idea of "find a woman" but might suggest a "but even when I find a good woman I seem to find myself a passenger on her road rather than living a shared life" over "there has been noone for me". After all if its a character who is likely to disappear you want to play the archetype to the hilt.

@ class comments -- Noted. I'll keep all those in mind.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I'll be sure to take them all into account before the final version of "The Wanderer" is played! That'll be awhile, so feel free to post any other ideas and comments!

@ Terjon -- I think I may have to snag that quote, good sir. Do you mind if I do?

I'm glad everyone's enjoying this character. Here's hoping he's as fun to play as he is to write. :P

i love the character concept. i do think that he could be a monk however, but not specifically trained as a monk. possibly a fighter with a level or two of monk? he probably started as a wanderer, traveling for the excitement, acting as a caravan guard, mercenary, bouncer, ect. but through years of this sort of life style his body and mind have become refined.
