There's been bloody murder! [Archive] - Wizards Community

And the guilty one was I!

We where facing a hag which was wearing some kind of breastplate that had children attached to it. Next to the hag there was a cage with more children inside. These where the children we where sent to rescue. So not interested in negotiating with the hag the party charged with me in the form of a black bear (druid).
My motto when wildshaping is: The body shapes the mind. Or when I'm an animal I react a lot more animalistic. And while the rest of the party where taking penalties on their attack rolls to avoid hitting the children I whaled away hurting the hag pretty badly but in the process my claws snuffed the lives of two children.
There was no time to consider this at the time. We where chasing the hag and chased her through a gate into a swamp but we where forced to retreat because she was joined by another 2 hags.
Priorities first we proceeded due south trying to find the city that employed us.
We found a city after a day's travel turns out we've gated to a country where all arcane casters are wanted dead (not alive). So the party wizard goes into a veritable panic and 2 other party members also have the heebie jeebies.

To make a long story short: My character isn't going to get a chance to properly deal with the guilt regarding those dead kids.
I wonder what would be a logical reaction for my druid over time.

Logically, the druid would probably experience extreme overwhelming guilt, to the point of major depression and withdrawal. They may sob uncontrollably, become bipolar, or they go the other path.

They may think that since it was so easy, the kids couldn't possibly matter. Maybe children are just pawns to be played with, maybe the adults too. This may be the reasoning considering the druid was a freaking bear tearing this kiddies apart.

Long story short, if the druid doesn't get some counselling, they could become extremely mentally anguished, or Lawful Evil

I'm hoping the former personally

Neutral Evil, druids gotta remain neutral in some way.

Anyway apart from that, id kinda agree with whats already been said. Perhaps your character goes into a state of morning and regret for whats happened to the children.

He will eventually move on though, he will always regret it, but he might swear to bring them back to life when he is powerfull enough, or take the bill to get another to bring them back.

I can see how this is a big deal, but its not the be all and end all of normality for your character... this is d&d remember. Death isnt the end, its just another inconvieniance.

Anyway, hope this helps.

You said that when you shape shift the body shapes the mind, perhaps you no longer trusts himself/herself to shape change. If you truly are feeling guilty about the deaths of the children i would recomend a period of time that you will abstain from shape changing for fear that you will cause the deaths of more innocents or possibly your party members. It doesn't need to be permanent but enough to make an impact on the game to show that your character is taking it seriously.

Actually, Druids can become LE. They just lose their spellcasting abilities (and maybe a few other abilities). I think you'll have to atone.

You could have it be that he starts to become more beastial at all times, starts gaining animal tendencies and being more ferocious, make him an animal all the time in frame of mind. -or- he could have no memory of it each time and fear what he does

or maybe your druid sees humans as evil (i.e. destruction of nature) and finds justice in his action. Maybe he justifies it to the point of hatred and vengeance. Then you become a druid of death, killing humanoids and slaying the wicked. Nature's Avenger! mwa ha ha ha ha ...ect

Its a few sessions further on now. We wound up in a country where we're wanted preferably dead so we didn't have much time to think. We ran for it, took a boat ride out of there and finally got to a relatively safe place, a pirate haven. There the party leader sent a message to the elven capital (Where our employer was) reporting in not to great a detail what happened. He mentioned the 2 children that died but did not mention that my character did it. (He's a nice guy Probably doesn't want to see me hang.)
After that there was a celebration and my character began to realize what he had done. He felt bad and got blind stinking drunk.

As we travelled back to the capital to report our findings in person we came across a bugbear which attacked. So my druid charges already his limbs fading from one shape to the next and then when he's standing right in front of the bugbear, nothing happens. The perplexed druid swallows and then hits the bear with his quarterstaff, and misses. A bugbear isn't much of a challenge for a well-rested party of lvl 6 so despite the failure of the druid it gets eviscerated pretty quickly and all the players are staring at me going "What the hell?"
The Dm didn't know about this so he takes me apart and I explain that the druid subconciously doesn't trust himself anymore while wildshaping. And I tell the DM not to provide me with a solution because I want the party (mostly my characters friends) to deal with this.

The party leader has asked my character about this once but when my character wasn't immediately forthcoming he let the matter be. Nobody (save myself) has scolded me, punished me or anything for my bad deed so my druid is beginning to wonder "was it really a bad thing?".

Not to back track or anything, But i think a really good way to have the druid react is have them become more like a cleric, reciting a private prayer for the children that died, and maybe tattooing to remind him what happened, and finally have him control the animal inside to the point of refinement in everything..
Just my two copper peices..

I think that if your Dm and other players are not getting upset that you are going this way with your character it is all good. The important thing is that you are enjoying this new side to your character. Something to remember is not to let it go too long or get to a point where your group starts to make plans for a new druid.

Well I am enjoying it and I specifically asked the DM not to act on this because I want to roleplay a little more with the rest of the group.

Its going to be fun when they aren't going to deal with this or help my character. Because something will 'switch' in his head. He will probably think that it didn't matter and begin its slow decline towards the evil side of the spectrum. And then they will *have* to help me. Or try and kill me. But I'm betting that I'll win that fight.
