Hi!

We have a brand new player in our group and she's decided she wants to play a cleric of Selune. Our group plays in the FRCS and I'm currently DMing CotSQ for our group of 5.

Can any of you guys help me with some background and fleshing out of her character? She's a straight level 13 character (have to make her start high level coz everyone else is and she'll be cannon fodder if she's not).

She's a female moon elf with dark hair and green eyes, a quiet and mysterious character. She wears a mithral shirt, uses a longsword and a small mithral shield.

I was toying with a background, and to make her fit into my campaign i thought of the following:

She was born in the Silver Marches, and started adventuring with a group of like minded people after her home town was attacked by drow surface raids. After many forays into the underdark, <insert name here> and her party tried to use teleportation magic to get to the drow city of <insert name here>, seeing that they suspect that that city and its rulers are the source of the drow raids on the surface. The faerzess in the underdark made the party wizard's magic go awry though, and they suffered a mishap. The party found themselves next to a heavy drow patrol deep in the underdark, and the entire party was slaughtered expect for our Selune worshipping cleric.

The current party then meets up with her on their way to maerimydra, as she's hiding and scavenging in the underdark, unsure of exactly where she is underneath the earth. The current party's quest is happens to sort of coincide with hers, and they are intrigued by this mysterious elven maiden. They agree to let her travel with them, seeing that she seems capable of handling herself and besides, surface dwellers in the underdark can never have enough friends travelling with them in such hostile surroundings.

I know its very basic seeing that i only came up with the rough idea today, and i want people's opinions on what i can add or drop to make her background and appearance unique and well fleshed out.

She's extremely green (the player) and still has to learn the basic rules, so she said i can work out a background for her character that will fit into my campagin as long as its a female, selune worshipping moon elf that's mysterious and uses a longsword and a small shield :)

Thanks for your help guys.

PS Hmm would be nice if one could give her a moonblade and work it into her background.. just a thought.

First, why is she a cleric of a human deity? Is she borned in a human settlement, or was she rescued by humans when her elven settlement was destroyed by drows? No... not when she was attacked by drow... I guess she was at least level 8 when she decided to go hunting some drows...

I miss some 3E specific information, but she could have been bitten by some kind of lycanthrope whe she was young. She was cast away from her elven settlement because of this. After wandering a few weeks, she encounter some Selune priests who helps her to master her lycanthropy. A few years latter, the Selune temple was destroyed by drows, and she and a couple of adventurer organized a punishing expedition.

My problem is: can 3E priests of Selune control themselves is they turn in lycanthropes?

Well, elven clerics of Selune are not unheard of, but she might also want to check out Sehanine Moonbow, who is an elven deity allied to and pretty similar to Selune. They're also both patron goddesses of Silverymoon (there are five altogether), so that would fit. And Sehanine has mysticism and moon elves in her portfolio, which seems to fit this character very well. And one last thing--Sehanine was the first elven deity to suspect Araushnee, who is now known as Lolth, of being a traitor before the battle between the elven gods and the anti-Seldarine. Lolth (this is from the Evermeet novel, BTW) feared Sehanine more than any other elven deity, including Corellon Larethian.
Anyway, just thought I'd throw that in, since she's a new player and may not be aware of the huge range of available choices in the Realms. Of course, having said that, if she still wants to go with Selune as a patron, it works just fine, as long as she can work out a reason why that makes sense in your campaign. Good luck, have fun!

A level 13 cleric for a beginner? That might prove hard... Lots and lots of spells... Anyway... If she really likes it, it will be easier. First of all, an elven cleric of selune is accepted, if not common. Especially a moon elf, since they are the ones who tend to blend to human society. Now... Let's see. She started from Silverymoon and ended in the underdark... Since she starts adventuring at such a high level, we could assume that she was a high-ranking "temple cleric" in a big temple of selune, who didn't really want to start adventuring (since she was already something like 8 or 9 level). But it was adventuring that found her... One day an invitation from a selune's shrine or temple from battledale came at her temple, asking for a group of clerics to help them for... let's say a big celebration of selune... (i don't remember one) Of course when the head priest asked "player's name" to be in the group, she was overly happy to join them. They decided to take the route northern of Anauroch. But upon reaching the dales, while in the cormanthor forest, they were attacked by a drow raiding party, and while the drow were fighting her companions, she (to her total shame for all her life), took flight. Lost in the forest and knowing that drow could at any time spring and attack, she begun to despair. Without knowing it she was heading deeper in the forest when one day she stumbled upon a lost portal. Not recognizing it she went through and found herself in a deserted underdark city. Then, after living for a while as a scavanger, she met the party... That's what came to me... Now about the moonblade. She is a child of a noble everskan family, and so she the moonblade passed to her. But. Since her cowardise in the cormanthor forest her moonblade fell dormant, and in adventuring she seeks a way to wake the blade's powers once again... That's it... Tell me if you like it...

PS. Why mithril shirt and not elven chain? It's makes more sense and clerics use all the protection they could get!

Poukis I really like that idea, but Im also a fan of the lycanthrope idea too... In fact I played such a character before.

Anyway not my thread, just wanted to comment, so I'll stop hijacking it now.

Why a straight 13 cleric and not Cleric 6/Silverstar 7?

Silverstar is the Prestige Class for a cleric of Selune and they gain natural lycanthropy at level 6 . . .

The Silverstar prestige class may be found on pages 201-202 of the Faiths and Pantheons book.

I've decided to change her deity to Sehanine Moonbow, so I think we'll be sticking with a straight level 13 cleric. I dont want to confuse her with multi or prestige classes, she's got enough to learn as is. As stated by other posters, playing your first game with a lvl 13 character wont be easy. She's very smart though so i'm sure she'll manage. Besides I'm the DM and she's my girlfriend so i'll help her out a bit :)

We recently had a player quit playing for personal reasons, and we're playing a rather hairy high level game so I suggested that she try playing (she loves fantasy books and so on) else the party will be a bit on the thin side.

This is what the party looks like:

Dwarf Barbarian 2/Fighter 11 (Torunn)
Elf Cleric 12 of Tymora (Keisha D'Arien)
Human Rogue 13 (Valdera Itkovian)
Elf Wizard 5/Shadow Adept 8 (Nathant Meliamne)
...and our new Elf Cleric 13 of Sehanine Moonbow (Silaque Amastacia)

We play City of the Spider Queen, and the party is up to chapter 2.

Once again my thanks for all the replies, you guys rock. This is what I've decided on for a background (influenced by all the replies here)

- Silaque was born and raised in Silverymoon and took up her career as a member of Sehanine Moonbow's clergy. She had faithfully served the church and local community for many years as spiritual inspiration to young elves and half elves who want to start their life's journey to enlightenment. Subsequently she has become a ranked member of the church, frequently involved in church ceremonies such as Lunar Hallowings, and the Feast of the Moon for the Mystic Rites of the Luminous Cloud.

Silaque gets asked by fellow clergy members to help them with the annual Feast of the Moon celebration in the nearby High Forest. She and a small group of the faithful start to travel, and as they stop a mere 10 miles outside Silverymoon in the surrounding farmlands to pray during the full moon, they hear the sounds of pillage and see fires in the farm houses nearby. They realise that drow are raiding the farmlands as they spot dark figures with stark white hair, and quickly run to the sounds of battle to help those that need it.

Sehanine's clergy are capable at combat and fight bravely, but are vastly outnumbered by the drow. A number of the clergy have been slain by drow, and Silaque starts to fear for her life. She and the remaining clergy run into the nearby Silverwood, with the drow hot in pursuit. As she hides in the undergrowth with dark elves all around, she hears how her long time friends and companions get murdered. Silaque notices a strange glow a few paces off just as a drow warrior spots her. She gets up from her hiding spot and runs towards the glow as fast as she can, hoping it to be a sign from Sehanine that will lead her to safety.

It is in fact a portal that is glowing bright blue, and with dark elves thirsting for her blood right behind her, Silaque takes the risk and runs through the portal.

A strange pulling sensation seems to pull her forward at impossible speed, and she stumbles out the other side of the portal in incredible darkness. As her eyes adjust due to the light generated by the softly glowing fungi on the ceiling of the cavern, she realises that she must be deep underground. She turns around but the portal she came through is no where to be seen (she doesnt know but is is a 2 way variable portal and if you dont speak the password, it takes you to a random location in the Underdark. The drow have been using it for years to raid the surface).

Fortunately, she was expecting to travel and hence has a backpack with everything she'll need to last for a while. Angry at herself for her cowardice and rash actions, Silaque vows that she will make it out of here alive, and she will repay the drow for what they did to her friends...

Well that's it. Any comments? :)

Her stats are as follows:

Silaque Amastacia, level 13 cleric of Sehanine Moonbow
female moon elf, 114 years old

Str 10
Dex 16 (18 with gloves of Dex +2)
Con 12 (14 with amulet of health +2)
Int 13
Wis 19
Cha 14

Used 35 point buy (and yes all the other players also used 35 point buy, no one's getting any advantages :) ) because we like a slightly higher powered game. Besides the party has at least one member die every 2nd or 3rd session, i play my monsters tough and smart. So they need rather high stats to make them competent. She actually had a 16 wisdom but i put 3 points into wis for level up ability bonuses at 4th, 8th and 12th level.

Her items are as follows:

+2 flaming longsword of sure striking
+1 light mithral shield of arrow deflection
+2 elven chainmail

gloves of dex +2
amulet of health +2
cloak of resistance +3

ring of protection +2
ring of minor fire resistance

boots of striding and springing
5000gp and all other goodies like holy symbol, backpack, clothes, etc. These items' total gold piece value is slightly less than what the other party members have, but i think that's fair seeing that she's new and hasn't really adventured before now.

She's got black hair, green eyes and pale skin. She's mysterious and seems to know things that she's not sharing with her fellow party members, yet pleasant and charismatic (cha 14). She has a strong, quiet resolve and is angry with herself at her cowardice for fleeing, yet knows that she had little choice considering the odds she and her fellow clerics were up against. Her motivations for adventuring are to repay the drow for what they did to her long time friends, even though she has to adventure more because of circumstance than choice. The party she meets up with has goals that sort of coincide with her own, and when she hears that the party also got hired to get to the root of the drow raiding problem on the surface, she makes up her mind and joins them.

Her two domains are elf and moon.

I like everything about this character, including the background, personality, and description (ok, I have a confession, moon elves are my favorite race, and Sehanine Moonbow is my favorite deity!). The stats makes sense to me too. I also like most of the equipment choices--the only thing I would think about changing is the longsword, maybe bring it down to a +1 since she can use Greater Magic Weapon to make it +3 or +4 (depending if it's 3.0 or 3.5 rules), so the +2 vs. the +1 is not to her advantage. Then she could use the savings for something else, what do you think? (Sorry about the min-max interjection here, but just thought it might help her out.)

Hey, just thought of this, in case you want to use it at some point--I made a PrC adaptation of Sehanine's specialty priests from second edition, and balanced it out with some help from Sarelle, A Man In Black, and a couple of others:

I'm going to take a look at that prestige class right now of sehanine moonbow, thanks Fingas!

I'd prefer to give her the +2 sword, seeing that most of the party has a +3 weapon or so, so i'd like her to have a minimum of +2. Besides i'm letting her start off with the basics (BTW her first game is this Sunday) when it comes to combat, like disengaging from melee, and flame striking at a distance. Then we'll move on to buffing the party and finally to buffing herself (she insists that her character is less melee orientated, so is more likely to buff the party than herself, seeing that she'd prefer to avoid melee).

You have a valid point from a min max point of view though. BTW we're playing 3.5.
