This is a board for developing characters from a Roleplaying standpoint. This is not about what would be the best feat for this character, or what race would go best with this class combo. That sort of thing Belongs on the Character Optimization board. This is also not the place to ask what the stats of a character from a movie or book would be. That belongs on either the Fantasy or Sci-Fi Thinktank boards.

Again, this is a roleplaying board, it is assume that people realize that when you post a character you are asking for help roleplaying them. Don't just have that be your subject, maybe as part of the subject or part of you post. But just saying "I want RP tips" is unhelpful, and unless you just want general RP tips, this is a bad subject.

Thank you for your time.

Because the WizO's, or anyone with authority, haven't came out and closed down any threads does not mean you should not follow the board rules when they're not around. After all, if you break the law IRL, is it "OK" because the police haven't locked you in jail yet?

The post may not be "How do I roleplay this character?" or "I need advice about being chaotic neutral!" the topic is roleplaying.

My question to you is, doesn't a lot of what you are whining about count towards character development? I mean, perhaps someone wants to know what path the character should take. Honestly, race and classes have a lot to do with roleplaying and character development. For example, there aren't many dwarven magicians out there. Why? Because the class and the race don't particularly mesh. So, someone asking whether the rase and class combo (example: a Dwarf ranger/thief/paladin) Also, feats play a HUGE part in the development of a character. For example, a thief who chooses spell related feats would not make for a very good thief eh? Also, the feat will make the character in the end. A character who selects the right feats in the right order can decide the path he/she chooses later on. (example: prestige classes) Now, I'm not bashing your comments so don't go on a tyrade. I'm simply pointing out one's method of madness for asking such questions.

P.S.
These posts are also not for quotes and phrase signatures 2 pages long either, but you have quite a bit hitched to the hind end of all of yours. :)

Things to ponder,

How the storyline relates to mechanics would be the focus for other foras. Like "What feat should I take to represent thsi combat style?" would be relevant to the skills and feats forum.
For example, there aren't many dwarven magicians out there. Why? Because the class and the race don't particularly mesh.
This is REALLY a character optimization topic. No dwarf would decide to be a wizard or not on the basis of his dwarven abilities. "Hmmm... I would like to learn arcane magic, but then I wouldn't get advantage of my abilities to wear heavy armour, use a waraxe and stability. And may race doesn't give me any abilities that makes me a BETTER magician. Maybe I should consider being a fighter instead?" The topic about how this dwarf got introduced to arcane magic (a rare pursuit among dwarves that may cause stigma among his peers) and how he would relate to his society afterwards IS a relevant topic.
Also, the feat will make the character in the end. A character who selects the right feats in the right order can decide the path he/she chooses later on. (example: prestige classes)
Actually, a character can be a part of a group or order WITHOUT having the relevant PrC. Most Harpers don't have the Harper Scout PrC and Purple Dragon Knights without the PrC are also common. A PrC is just another tool to get abilities that harmonizes with your concept, but are not REQUIRED for your concept. Therefore any topics about these actually belongs to the PrC or Optimization boards. IMHO

I bet you play with the handbook open and ready to spat out rules to other players. Once a young dwarf learns of the arcane arts he will absolutely consider them at some point. Now, his parents, who happen to be warriors themselves would absolutely sway him one way or another. Giving him reasons why not to be a wizard/sorcerer. Those reasons would ABSOLUTELY be because sorcerers are not known to wear armor because it hinders your capabilities. Also, dwarves are very much melee fighters and no armor means......no defense that close. All of this IS relevant to the characters development. Maybe somebody wants to know these things in laying out his story.

In the end it boils down to this, rather than spewing out your expert knowledge of what boards are designed for what, just go with the flow. Answer their questions and be done.

Everything I do with my character, IS character development. What feat I choose, what spell I choose, what proficencies I choose, the skills I choose. Yes, these could be considered optimization, but by the same token, it can be related to your chosen path as a Dwarven Defender, or an Arcane Archer.

I don't understand on what basis you are saying that. But you are partially correct since I usually DM the game and consider suggesting what rules are appropriate at the moment my job in the game. But I don't need to keep the handbook open :)

Yes, and the information is available in the appropriate foras IMO. If I felt I needed input on both a feat and a class in this community, I would post separate questions for each case to the relevant forum for the question.

I'm sorry if I have given you any impression of having "expert knowledge"about what these boards are for. I am in no way affiliated with Wizards of the Coast or Hasbro inc. apart from being a consumer of their products and services. I should have made the "IMHO" at the end of my post stand out a little clearer.

Though I agree that this topic don't belong in this forum, and should rather be moved to the meta-board since it is a topic about the use of the forum.

Following your logic, we don't have any need for any of the other forums related to rules, sinces everything boils down to being "character development" and relevant for this forum. I don't agree. I don't think you should take the name of the forum that literally, and rather follow the (official) forum description cited in my previous post.

I for one liked it better when this forum was called "In-depth roleplaying" since it made it clearer what the forum was for (IMO.) And I mean to recall that you saw fever rules based question then (and a lot less traffic too.)

But that's my point, it may not be entirely about the feat. My logic sometimes is what that feat will do for my character battling an adult dragon in the near future. Or if that skill will allow me to begin construction of an artifact I've been contemplating. A skill or feat, in the right context, has to do with a characters development. Look, I'm not trying to say that boards shouldn't be seperated, there is obvisouly a need for optimization boards and so on and so forth, but just because I mention feat doesn't automatically point me to the optimization boards. All I'm saying is that sometimes, these things will fit character development. And yes, I stand firm that all things that go into my character, have to do with his development! What class, skill, feat, language, armor, proficiencies, etc. has to do with development. You aren't wrong, and neither am I.

I think character optimization and development are closely related. If yiou decide you want to play a street wise fighter with a shady background, you are going to want to make him the best he can be.You are going to make choices that make him good in a street brawl. This provides opyimization but also furthers the concept, the character.
