One of my characters is a blackguard, who serves an Aztec-themed god based on the practice of human sacrifice.

And he wears full plate armour.

So what I'm looking for is a totem-like design or appearance for his armour, generally how it should appear. No beaks or bird-images, my paladin (other character) already has that.

Currently I am thinking an appearance exaggerated and squared like stone carvings. Generally dark and grainy red with numerous gold decorations.

Can anyone think of improvements?

Another thing that is prevalent in images of Aztec culture are feathers.
This image here (http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/prehistory/latinamerica/images/aztec2.jpg) depicts an aztec warrior who would have feathers attached to his arms giving him the appearance of wings.

Large headgear made of feathers is also very appropriate.

Bright colours of course, and a lot of gold is a must.
Perhaps this (http://users.myonline.be/~tdn24064/kuifje06.jpg) is a good basis for a helmet design on the armor.

How carefully do you intend to follow the Aztec theme? Plate mail in and of itself would seem to contradict such. If your being fairly open, however, serpent or great, hunting cats would make for a nice theme. Similarly, insects could be made to suit your purpose.

Alternatively, you could leave behind those themes and decorate your fairly plain armor, probably taken from a fallen foe anyway, in trophies pulled from your most powerful kills. A puma's paw, the crest of a harpy, and a human heart on a string.

If you don't like birds, then your other plausible option would be the jaguar, but since you're using full armor, I'd go with decorating a fallen enemy's

Have you seen the TMNT movie? Check out the Max Winter's (the bad guy) armor. Cool stuff right there. Also, the other bad guys worth looking at too.

Alternatively, emphasize the sacrificial aspects of the Aztec gods.

Your armor is carved from dark stone, scratched and pitted by years of blows...or something worse. Carvings of skulls and sacrificial rites embellish the otherwise plain armor...and the grooves are full of brownish-red stains...almost as if blood had once flowed freely down the surface of the armor.
