You hear the faintest sound of footsteps behind you. You turn around, but see nobody. Shrugging it off as your imagination, you continue on your work; however, you can't help but feel that somebody is watching you.
"Is somebody there?" You speak to the air, but get no answer. Nervously, you begin to get up from your seat to get a breath of fresh air. Surely, you've just been working too long and need a break. Before you rise, though, you feel a cold hand on your shoulder. You turn and look again, and after concentrating for a moment, you can see the faintest outline of a hand holding you down. You look up to see who it belongs to, and see a shadow that is beginning to materialize into a person. His face is covered by a mask that resembles that of a monstrous wolf, minus the skin, with fangs, bones, and muscles exposed to the air, and eyes that glow a pale blue. You can see the faintest hint of a grin in his expression as he notices your fright.
"Boo." Being able to both feel his cold touch and hear his eerie voice is proof enough for you that this man is alive, and not a mere figment of your imagination. Panicked, you try to get up and run away, but he senses your motives and shoves you to the ground. He then pounces on top of you like an animal, and draws a small blade in one blindingly fast motion. The next thing you know, he has both stabbed his blade into your heart, and already removed it. He walks away calmly, leaving you to bleed to death, confused, shocked, and above all else, petrified with pure terror.

Basically, I'm trying to play a character who relies on scaring his enemies stupid before killing them in one fell swoop. I'm dead-set on making him a totemist, too, so that he can have a Krenshar Mask soulmeld shaped and bound to his brow and totem chakras.

My problem arises in the fact that I can't seem to think of a reason why this guy kills. Should he just do it for fun, or does him being a hired assassin fit better? Maybe he works for a mafia of some sort? And why is he so infatuated with terrorizing him enemies before he kills them? I don't know what to do for his backstory at all. Any ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Also, I'm not sure what race to make this guy. I'm thinking Duskling, since they're kinda scary-looking (and, as a bonus, it'll negate his XP penalty). And one last thing - I need help thinking of a name. I've always been terrible with coming up with fantasy names.

PS: This post was probably more to post that quick story at the top more than anything else. :) (I still need help, though!) I came up with it from a combination of 1) going through MoI (which I just got) and noticing just how damn scary the Krenshar Mask would actually look if it were real, 2) suddenly realizing that scary stuff and Ghost-Faced Killer go hand-in-hand, and 3) doing the above while istening to Waterton (http://mkmk1.com/bone/soundtrack/waterton.mp3) by Richard Bone (http://mkmk.com/bone/biography.htm) (first link is an audio clip, second link is a biography). After that, the premise for this character and the quick story came to mind in an instant.

There are many reasons for killing some one or something but truly scaring them requires a very special personality. Some scare because it is natural for them (dragons), some scare for the fun of the reaction (some chaotic evil) and some do it for a more intimate reason.

the feeling I get from your character is that he is almost in search of something highly elusive. For example your character has had some sort of epiphany (enlightening experience) concerning fear and terror. Your character believes for one reason or other that by killing a sentient being at the height of thier fear it will reveal something powerful or special. Perhaps a beings soul or power is chased into the heart by powerful fear and as such you take their heart and thier power. Perhaps this is all a compensation for an incident in which your character was terribly affraid and now do everything to conquer that fear through instilling it in others.

Thats my take on this. It seems to me there should be a reason for scaring some one before the killing. A professional assasin is most effective when unseen and un-noticed. Taking time and effort to scare them is inefficient and adds to the chance of being found, killed or stopped.

Sounds like a truly nasty peice of work. I like it.

P.S. great avatar choice. ;)
