My DM has these very stereotypical views of alignments, particularly evil ones. He thinks that an evil character goes around killing and causing destruction. If you're lawful maybe you kill according to a code. If you're chaotic you kill anyone who you feel like. Probably the most ridiculous thing I've heard him argue about is that in the Complete Scoundrel under scoundrel's of any alignment Riddick is listed as CE, and my DM argues he should be CN. I strongly disagree. Just because you're CE doesn't mean you kill anyone just because you feel like it. In Riddick's case he kills those who get in his way and he doesn't feel bad about it he probably doesn't even care that he killed them as opposed to knocking them out. That underlined part is what I think makes a character CE. What does anyone else think about it? |

Evil means that you'll hurt others to get your way, not feel bad, and not go easy on them unless you see some benefit for yourself in doing so. Evil is selfish to an extreme degree. While there are those you may love, and perhaps even view as more important than yourself, you'll either lose them uncaringly if it suits you, or you'll be evil for them, doing things only for this person, but having no cares for those you hurt in aiding them. So it really describes a good amount of people, not just homocidal weirdos. |
