| Nithendil11-29-04, 07:18 PM | Sorry if this has already been discussed. The search function doesn't wrok well for me, and no matter what binary definiitions I use it brings up 1000 threads that have nothing to do with what I am looking for. If this has been discussed ad nauseum, a link would be appreciated. Anyways, I got my character (a lawful neutral cleric/wizard going towards true necromancer), I got my background, and now I need a bit of help. I'm ok at min/maxing, but comming up with RP stuff seems to be a bit difficult for me. Anyways, what are some potential traits, mannerisms, and sayings of a necromancer that you can think of? I can post my background, but it is a bit long. TIA |
| Melpomene11-29-04, 09:10 PM | Well, YMMV, but, for a wizard especially... 1.) Hair tucked back, to keep blood from getting on your clothes. 2.) Gloves, cheap and expendable. 3.) Collection of small, non-combat knives and tools. 4.) Glasses, or other tools for close examinations. 5.) On unhealthy obsession with death. 6.) Nihilism. 7.) Futalism. 8.) Gallows humour. 9.) Unhealthy obsession with blood. 10.) Self-mutilation, tatoos, ritual scarring, etc. 11.) Masks or heavy robes. 12.) Personal and barely-contained tragity. 13.) Hubris. Lots of hubris. 14.) Being comfortable in very odd places (tombs, mud, graveyards, mine shafts) 15.) Moderate goth-like tendancies. |
| Kratilim Valqui11-30-04, 10:11 AM | I also need some help on this factor... I can think of 1 or 2 typical things, but how does a necromancer act and such? Some of you are bound to have some good idea's... :D |
| Melpomene11-30-04, 02:33 PM | 16.) Treating the dead the same as you treat the living. (Stroke your zombies tenderly, whisper your thoughts to them) 17.) Treat all living beings as future corpses. Everyone is expendable. 18.) An unhealthy cataloging of how the rest of the party deals with diseases, injuries, etc. 19.) Ponder out loud where you think people's souls will go when they die. 20.) Complete paranoia. You know too much about death not to be afraid. 21.) Wear protective coverings to keep well-kept facial hair, etc. from becoming sullied. 22.) The need to escape. This can lead to drinking, debauchery, or simply diving into books for hours. 23.) Trying to do good things soley for the sake of escaping damnation. 24.) Applying last rights to everyone the party kills in battle. 25.) Bathe in blood, or use it in other unsavoury ways. 27.) Quiet, thoughtful introspection. 28.) Laugh raucusly at the wrong moments. 29.) Holier Than Thou. 30.) Savour moments of terror, even your own. |
| Skyrocket11-30-04, 09:05 PM | Great necromaner sayings: "Death is only the begaining." "You have a nice skeleton. I'll take it!" "Death itself is mind to command." "Most fear death. But I know death and because of that I know no fear." "Rise! Rise, my creation! From death you are reborn!" "The living complain too much. The dead know how to keep their piece." |
| Nithendil11-30-04, 09:16 PM | Wow, this is great stuff! Thank you everyone, I appreciate it. |
| Melpomene12-01-04, 04:03 PM | 31.) Patient contemplativeness. 32.) Hurried desire, need to do before time runs out. 33.) Begining sentances with "I know you know this already, but..." (Vecna) 34.) Frown. All the time. 35.) Black eyeliner. 36.) Black nailpolish. 37.) Gothic or Boroque jewlery. 38.) Gothic or Boroque clothing. 39.) Wear black. It goes with everything, and covers up blood stains. 40.) Keep a catalog of tissue samples, skin grafts, etc. 41.) Spiderweb, fishnet, or crudely stiched patterns. 42.) Even if you don't wear armour, you keep vital parts of your body, such as neck and wrists, covered and protected. 43.) Mutter under your breath. 44.) Tremble, shake, or quiver when trying to perform delicate tasks. |
| Murr-Quan Lord #212-02-04, 10:45 PM | You could play against type. One of the coolest chars any of my players ever came up with was a true neutral cleric necromancer in shining, full-plate armor, wielding a longsword. He had the domains of Magic and War, and had an entire army of skeletons following him around everywhere. Fixated on conquest; used the undead as a means to an end. Thought zombies were nauseating. Maybe your char sees it as a means to an end? Or has some focus outside of necromancy? Even if it's only a secondary focus, that could help define your char's personality. Give him a hobby, some interest in something aside from necromancy. |

Another take is one i took in a 1730s game that my friend ran.Necromancers were accepted in the same way that jewish financiers(no Im not racist, just using historical racism as a paralel), as a necissary evil, some one who delt with the unwholesome stuff so decent folk wouldnt have to. I doubled down on this and was a lawyer as well! My associates were a merchantil holy man,a withen-the-law bounty hunter, my dour, undead, Dr. Watson style mage, and a Swashbuckling Thug(she was a bad ass). Played somthing like mix between the Rockford files and Quincy .Early on we established a sepertion between me and the boys, so any one they had to kill was delivered to my chambers (as was correct, as I was a licenced officer of the court) for me to interveiw. The home brew necro class I was playing was able to talk to the dead at will, so I would interveiw them, clean and prep their bodies for burial(Ring of Prestidigitation!),and convice them to turn on their co-conspiritors.I could have Commanded them, but only had to use this once, as I was truly respectful and always gave them a good burial... I kept only ghosts, and small ones at that, as a gentalman of my stature would hardly have use for the services of a smelly brute like a zombi, and the ghost of the "still born" where easy for a low level Necro to control... Necromancer was the wholesome upstanding part of my work, and it was a better campainfor it! |
| Sorcerer12-18-04, 03:29 AM | 20.) Complete paranoia. You know too much about death not to be afraid. I kinda like this one. Perhaps he is afraid of the dark. Always keeps a "Continual Flame" going or he can't sleep. He adventures with a group because he wants the protection (though he will never tell the PCs that). He fears his own undead. secret doubts play that they are not really under his control. To cover for his secret fear, he acts very brave, but only where he knows the PCs will back him up. He carries a few Buffing spells for the PCs to show he is their friend, but he is still kind of creepy. I always DM'd Necros as somewhat insane. Too much time with the dead messes you up. |
