I was designing a hypothetical character yesterday, and I can't quite nail down his alignment.

Basically, he would be a serial killer who believed he was doing people a favor. I.e., he has come to the conclusion that (for reason of one horrible tragedy or another) to live is to suffer, but instead of just committing suicide, he wants to "help out" all the other suffering people in the world. I imagine he would wander into slums and the like during downtime in cities, looking for people to put out of their (perceived) misery.

He would be very morose and pessimistic (in a "vanity, vanity, all is vanity" kind of way). I'd try to give him a weapon like a Keen Scythe, because he doesn't enjoy the act of killing people, he believes it is for their own good and would try to make it quick and painless.

Yes, I know such a character would cause inter-party strife, but I don't really intend to play him anyway. Maybe as an NPC in one of my games.

To get back to the point, what alignment would he be? I'm thinking almost certainly evil, but as far as Law/Chaos I'm at a loss.

yes, he is breaking traditional laws, but becuase he has set his own code that he follows, that would make him lawful. He would be chaotic if every now and then he tortured a person

He has his own way of looking at things. And isn't bound by a higher authority. Clearly he is Chaotic Evil. Remember lawful has nothing to do with following laws. Lawful people look to an authority other than themself when making decisions. Like the code and ranking of an organization. Or the rules and ideals of a religion. Chaotic people see themselves as the highest authority on what to do. All well made characters should have a reason for their actions and chaotic ones are not an exception. What you have so far is clearly CE.

Obviously not someone you would want to adventure with either. Sheesh... "oh my, that bugbear mauled you horribly. Let me put you out of your misery."

I dunno, i always took chaotic people as those who were eratic and changed day to day, just doing totally random things. While lawfull people had a set way of going about everything in their lives, they wouldnt have random outbursts and such.

Personally i recon he is lawfull, or neutral at least, but not chaotic.

As for the good/evil axis, i would even go as far to say that he could be neutral since he is not doing it out of any sort of malice or ill intent. A priest of kelemvor or jergal might put a brutally wounded (and unhealable) soilder out of their misery, is that evil?

And i actually think that this character is quite playable if played properly.

I dunno, thats just me though.

I'd go with Neutral Evil. After all, the attitude seems to basically be the attitude of the Grey Waste -- that life is horrible, miserable, and hopeless and that it can never be any better. Planes usually reflect their alignment pretty well, and since the Grey Waste is neutral evil at its finest, I'd say that the attitude of hopelessness and hatred of existence is neutral evil.

JulesCARV, I think you're right. I don't think he would be random or psychopathic enough to be CE, but he would probably be too opportunistic to be LE. If he knew he could execute someone without getting caught/killed for it, then he would. If it posed too much personal risk, then he wouldn't. After all, if he dies, no one else will perform his "duties"

I started thinking about a build for this character, and I'm leaning toward Human Cleric of Nerul, prestiging into Doom Lord (Planar Handbook). Prepare buffs, utility spells, and instant-death spells, and try to do the dirty work himself (Wade in with a Scythe and Extended-Divine Power/Righteous Might).

That guy is NOT evil by any means...

He tries to HELP people!

He is Good! He is just crazy! Being mental does not give alignments!

Wether he is Lawful or Chaotic, depends on his methods, and such...

Im not even going to begin to state how insane that statement is... there is no way in hell that this guy is good. Just because he is insane doesnt mean he is immune to alignment restrictions... if that were the case then we would have homocidal paladins and what-not...

..damn it man... that doesnt even make sense.

That was actually the exact reaction I got from my brother when I asked him what alignment this character would be. He replied, "Dude, it's D&D. He's Chaotic Good."
