I can't help but notice that people seem to be a little over-zealous to break class-related clichés at the moment.
There's nothing wrong with this, in theory. But when people start coming up with "civilised barbarians", "lenient paladins" and "blasphemous clerics" I start to think these are more contradictions in terms than character twists.
In my mind the only reason one would play a cleric is to have a pious character, one would only adventure as a barbarian if one enjoyed barbarism and what, I ask you, is a paladin unless he/she relentlessly hunts down evil?

This isn't to say I think every character should stick to it's class stereotype. Far from it. After all, who wants to play a Dwarf fighter in chainmail with a battleaxe?
All I'm saying is that cliché-bashing can be taken too far, to the point of ridiculousness.

To let you know where I'm coming from, and to give an example of what I consider to be an interesting character with a twist, without going "too far", here's one I made earlier.
Sasnywas Etheldaarc the Contained (Sasny to his... um... to those who know him well)
Sasnywas is a lawful evil Half-Elf fighter.
Sasnywas was adopted and trained to fight by a paladin. His foster father made a huge impression on him, despite their philosophical differances, and Sasny developed a deep affection and respect for the man.
When his foster-father and mentor died, Sasny decided to follow some of his paladin code (to an extent), out of respect for the man who had taken him off the streets and given him a decent life.
This is what makes him lawful evil (as opposed to chaotic evil... I generally only play chaotic characters :P )
However hard he tries to follow this code of honour, though, Sasny has an underlying love for murder, torture, pillage, arson, slaughter, mutilation and all that fun stuff. Every so often, he can't stop himself performing some act of unspeakable evil, just to let off steam. Afterwards he always feels profoundly guilty, and that he has let his dead foster-father down.

By the way, this whole post just popped into my head while I was having a shower earlier, so it's probably not very well thought out.

I think that twists such as the one you came up with add a very nice flavor to the game, and am currently working on a character that while classified as CG, will resort to some pretty creul methods and underhanded tactics against those who hurt others. Total "end justifies the means" idea, and I like it.
